B-25 Artwork

I have known my grandfather flew B-25's in the South Pacific for years but I have just exchanged emails with someone that's father did all of the nose work and artwork on the B-25's from 1942-44 that were in the 5th AAF, 38th BG, 70th, 71st, 338th and 339th Squadrons stationed around Papua, New Guinea.  The "luckydice", "The Wolf Pack" (grandpa's squad), and  "The Green Dragons".

Please let me know if you would like the digital output when I receive it.  Its the real stuff.

I should have his 201 file by next week and I have been told that it has about 60 pictures of his crew and his B-25 (don't know which designator yet), serial number 41-30248...and some aerial pictures of a strike flown on 4-3-44 over Hollandia.

There are some really, really nice folks helping me with his research as well who are finishing the touches on one of the final books in a series of books that researched the 5th AAF in the South Pacific.  They are a bit expensive but it chronicles the entire 5th AAF march through the S Pacific.  There are also some unbelievable history and photos at www.sunsetters38bg.com and the site is managed by a B-25 pilot that flew with the "The Green Dragons".

Believe it or not, none of these folks knew this game existed and all were very very insterested in how AH planes flew...don't be surprised if you hear of one of these fine gentlemen joining this game and taking the 25 on some runs!  Very exciting stuff.

Soul, I hope you check that website out...38thBG was the "dirtmoving" wing of the 5th.  They are super people running that site...he answered my emails about my grandfather in 15 minutes and I know he would pass out with excitement to see this game.  All world human being....really.

I'll be sure to check it out this evening when I'm off work.  I have the 354th unit history and I'm planning on getting some books on the 3rd BG as well.  I'll have to add that to the list, my uncle flew B-25's with the 321st in the MTO and my grandfather flew them along with B-17's and B-29's stateside but never deployed during the war.  I think I just have B-25's in the blood.

They are having a tiny delay due to health with the writers.  One of the lead researchers told me that the 1st edition research is virtually complete (unless more goobers like me send them more information in WW II footlockers) otherwise, any additional research found will be written into the 2nd edition.  I can't wait to get the book.

I am the co-author of "Saga of the Sun Setters: The Illustrated History of the 38th Bomb Group During World War II," and have been looking through our archive to find whatever information I can about your grandfather. I have put together most of his combat record, and was going to send you a list of his missions and the planes he flew in, but I have decided instead to do a small write-up explaining what was going on in the war during his time with the 38th Bomb Group, which will serve to put his missions into context. I will also send you a couple maps of New Guinea, which is where most of his missions took place. I will also give you a list of the men he flew with. Our records are by no means complete, but fortunately I think I can fill in most of the gaps with some (hopefully) educated guesswork. I hope to have something to you by the end of the week. Thanks for your interest, and I hope all is well.

Yes.

Don't hold your breath then.  He started his 43rd BG book back in the mid 90s, took lots of money and information from the 43rd vets with the 'intention' of getting it done for them.  It's still not done, and most of them are now gone.

His 345th book is wonderful, but he's not followed through on his other stuff much to the disappointment of the folks who contributed and were expecting it done.

Any information from your grandfather would be most appreciated, especially if he kept a diary. The sources for most of our accounts of the various missions flown come straight from diaries, written accounts and interviews, and while we have a great deal of information, we don't have anything from most of the veterans. As it stands now, your grandfather is not mentioned in the main body of the text, a consequence of having not been shot down (or something dramatic along those lines) and our not having contacted him for whatever reason. He is, however, mentioned in the book's fifth appendix, which details 48 of the aircraft that flew with the 38th Bomb Group throughout the war. For each of those aircraft we try (and mostly succeed) to list every mission it flew. The book is essentially complete and in the final editing stages, so hopefully we can get it out soon. Thanks. It appears you are correct Guppy....I spoke with a couple of men that flew with my grandfather and wanted to see how he was doing and they told me they had pre-paid for the book in 1998!  Oh well...
