New Job site
« on: July 16, 2009, 12:53:13 PM »
http://www.unitedwework.org/

Just posting another source for getting your credentials out. Indeed.com is my favorite. I like this one as well. You don't take any tests but it tries to find you important personality skills, job skills, and personal preferences relating to work. Further, It acts as somewhat of an buffer between you and the company. If a company is interested in your profile they go through this website to contact you. Based on the description of the job and it's benefits, location etc. you can simply click not interested or click interested if the position meets your needs. Hope this gives some the unemployed a boost. :salute

How old are you Getback, if you don't mind me asking? I seem to recall from other posts that you are over 40. Is your perception such that you feel discriminated against because of your age?

Don't know how he feels but that is definitely my opinion, I put in plenty of applications even go for interviews but my view is once the find out my age(51) they cool off very quick.
I have applied for jobs that were very similar to what I did for over 12 years using all the same pc prgrams but got told "sorry we found someone more experienced" and when I call people I know within the company it's normally someone just out of school or college that they can pay minimum wage to.

My mom is running into the same thing, with her being a few years left till she can retire.  She was smart with her money for the past 20 years so she really just wants to get a job to add some security and to pass the days quicker.  Just nothing out there right now for someone over 50.

Well this is a two parter for me. Yes I feel discriminated against. I applied for a job at a local S&P 500 company 2 times. No hire, no interest whatsoever. Then I take a temporary assignment. Guess where they send me!? Yep to that company where I worked for over a year. When I and another contract worker arrive we are dumb founded. Everyone there was under 30 with many only 22-24 years old. To make matters worse, that is the department they promote from. Meaning you aren't getting into that company except by that department and that department hires them extraordinarily young. No one was near my age of 55 or my fellow contractor who was I believe a couple of years younger. While there, they hired 2 more employees; Both in their early 20s. Neither had near the experience I had. Having said that the only thing I can control is me. I graduated with a masters a couple of years ago and am working towards my CPA certification. Should I never get another job at least I gave it a better shot than most.

There are cost reasons why they hire the younger unskilled set. Mostly health benefit costs. Us old timers are viewed as high maintenance. (Do not go into any health debates please. I want this thread to remain open).

That is not why I posted this thread. I wanted to help others. Something I immensely enjoy and do hope it helps.

Addendum: There was an article in the paper where stats showed that people over 50 took 30 weeks to find a job and people under took 24 weeks or something like that.

My experience is about the same. I turned 56 on 7/1. I've heard all the crap that people like to console you with like, "oh, people will value your maturity, stability and experience!", and it's all exactly that - crap platitudes.

For all you pull-yourself-up-by-your bootstraps-this-is-the-land-of-opportunity-you-can-be-whatever-you-want-to-be types reading this you're most likely not over the age of 40 seeking employment that pays better than dishwashing or retail sales. Nowadays everything in the U.S. seems to be about minimizing costs and maximizing profits with concepts like integrity and societal conscience being considered antiquated notions easily cast aside. IMO an older job seeker might do better by moving to India or China and seeking employment there.

My niece graduated the school of business at UVA last year. She's bright and did well but graduated with no particular honors and no masters degree. She has a job waiting for her with a large accounting firm here and has had since before her graduation last year. This year she has casually enrolled in and finished a couple of courses for the needed additional credits to sit for the CPA exam. Still no masters degree. She doesn't even sit for the first module of her CPA exam until next week. But she has a job waiting.

A sizable chunk of my work history was in construction and later, in part, in construction management for a large manufacturer in a role with corporate engineering in facilities management. In the latter few years I saw more and more workers who couldn't communicate in any other language than Spanish. I'm close enough still to the construction industry in this area that I know absolutely that these jobs could have just as easily been filled by American citizens of any age at a, for the most part, much higher skill level. The key? Cost and maximizing profit without any oversight from a government that is supposed to serve its CITIZENS.

Such is life today in our "great" country where unchecked capitalism reigns supreme. Bitter? Yeah. Go figure.

Good luck Getback.

which is why when this is seen, it's time to call INS, as we know the status of most you mentioned.

Sounds good but try getting INS, ICE or whatever they call themselves today to respond. They're a sad joke and a smokescreen effort at best IMO.
