Stabo bombs
« on: July 16, 2009, 10:49:13 PM »
stabo bombs were bassically "armor peircing" bombs they had long spikes on the tip of the bombs so when the hit the tank, ship etc. it would penatrate the armor and cause more damage to the tank, ship

would be a great addition and it would help to take out those 10 inch thick armor wirbles   :D            heres a pic            :salute :salute

I like the sound of it, I think amor piercing bombs in general would be an interesting addition. They might give folks a reason to up dive bombers off CV's.

just curious, how much were these spike bombs used?

"Special" bombs not allowed in game... No delay fuses, standoff fuses, parachute bombs, skip bombing,
daisy cutters, Tallboys, Blockbusters, etc etc etc...

I know, bummer huh!!!

That's not how Stabo worked, and not the targets they were intended for.

There were two different kind of bombs that looked that way:

- Stachelbomben (Stabo). They were used against railway lines and similar traffic infrastructure. The spike was added to prevent the bomb from bouncing off - it would get stuck in the embankment with either a timed fuse (allowing the bomber to get separation before detonation), or with a special vibration fuse that would get triggered by passing trains.

- A Dinort-Stab was another kind of spike that was simply added to ordinary bombs. This 1-2 feet long rod was simply meant to trigger the fuse just before the bomb hits the ground to ensure maximum effect against soft targets. There was also a similar version utilizing a much longer (up to 9ft) telescopic rod that was used on the Russian front during winter, preventing the bomb from burying withing the snow layer before exploding.

In either case, the spikes were not meant to penetrate armor, they wouldn't have been able to anyway.

It's not so much as they are 'not allowed' its more of that the game won't support special ordnance packaged due to limitations of the game code.  Pyro has previously said that they are looking to correct this by adding a 'perked ordnance' feature that would allow certain planes to have special ordnance packages like parafrags and rockets for the B-25H, etc.
