P-38 stall & spin test film
« on: January 22, 2001, 04:23:00 PM »
Loaded 50% fuel, 1x burn rate, and hit the local HQ for the fun of it. After I hit the HQ, I went ahead and did this test. Stalls, both power on and off, with and without flaps. This isn't exactly a perfect test since I didn't cut the manifold pressure back to the same level on each power on stall. Still, it had some interesting results.

Jimdandy.. you need to use Aces High film viewer to review .ahf (aces high film) files.  Extract the file into your HTC/Aces High/Films directory to get it to show on your film list.

All this debating the P-38, and only TWO people watched the film? Makes ya think, don't it?

I didn't intend to spin the aircraft, but once she stalled in certian conditions it spun. Kinda strange that power off with flaps, it stalls normally. Add power and she'll stall off to the left and enter a spin.

Watch the film, you'll be surprised.

I watched it. Its the same thing that happens in the middle of a dogfight! You do a manouver that should have no chance in hell of spin & swim and yet it happens.

However, your stalls and spins happen at less than 100 mph. at that speed ill UNDERSTAND and accept that a spin is bound to happen. But the BS is that it happens at 200-230 mph too!

Last night I got tangled with 1 p47, 1 spit and 1 chog over a8 at 8k alt. They had 5k alt advantage on me and came in as a pack to kill my unlucky behind.

Started on evasives, keeping my speed above 200 , twisting and keeping away from their guns for about a minute.. and doing quite well too. Then, on a really soft turn, low g pull (2 g's) over horizon at 230 mph, plane banked 30 degrees left and nose up about 10 degrees from horizon and all the sudden WHAM the plane spins twice to the RIGHT and goes into flat spin for no fediddleing reason.
