Film Franchise Box Office Takes
« on: July 19, 2009, 02:48:46 PM »
Have you ever wondered how much money is made on these films?  Some are huge hits and others just bomb at the box office.  The criteria for a film franchise is three films or more.  Some franchises have started at the big screen and have direct to video sequels.  These are strictly theatrical releases and only cover North America alone with tickets sales rounded off to the nearest million.

Star Wars
Episode 1 The Phantom Menace $431 million    1999
Episode 2 Attack of the Clones $311 million    2002
Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith $380 million    2005
Episode 4 A New Hope $461 million    1977
Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back $291 million    1980
Episode 6 Return of the Jedi $310 million    1983

Lord of the Rings
Fellowship of the Rings $314 million   2001
The Two Towers $341 million   2002
Return of the King $377 million  2003

Spiderman
1 $404 million   2002
2 $374 million   2004
3 $337 million   2007

Pirates of the Carribean
Curse of the Black Pearl $306 million   2003
Dead Man's Chest $423 million   2006
At Worl's End $310 million    2007

Shrek
1 $268 million    2001
2 $437 million    2004
3 $321 million    2007

Just to post a few this time, more to follow.

To find out how much money is made on these films you also have to factor in the costs involved; production, marketing, printing etc.

Don't higher ticket prices = more box office money?  i.e. 500,000 people paying $7 a ticket for a movie in 2003 isn't going to be as much as 500,000 people paying $9 a ticket in 2009?

Also, is Star Wars circa 70's 80's adjusted for inflation?
