Need CPU/motherboard compatibility info

I need to know if the following CPU will work on my computer:

Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

Here is my motherboard info:

Differences: an additional 512 MB of RAM has been added, PSU changed to a 500w unit, new graphic card installed (NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS).

And if it is compatible with my system, I'll need to know how to install it.

If anyone has recommendations on a different CPU for my system, I'm all ears.

Changing out the CPU is easy.   I'm just wondering if you'll need to flash your BIOS.

That processor has a different pin count than the socket on you motherboard, wont work.

Yup, looks like the only benefit of an upgrade would be to find a 2.8ghz Pentium 4 (Northwood Core).  This will give you a slight improvement over that Celeron you have in there now.  However, I wouldn't spend more $20 on a CPU upgrade.  Check Ebay or Craigslist for used Pentium 4's.

Your computer computer is getting quite dated.  I had 2.8ghz Pentium back in 2003.  That's 6 years ago.  No real upgrade is going to give you benefit in today's apps/games.  Save up for a new computer is the best option you have IMO.

i have a 2.8ghz/1meg/800   also have  2 3.0ghz/1meg/800 laying around here ..

I've been getting recommendations to the Pentium 4 all over the place, so that's what I'm going to get. Also it is to my understanding that this does not come with a fan or heat sink. Would I be able to use the ones I have on my old processor (assuming I know where the old processor is)?

the old northwood run hot .. my 2.8 and 3.0 run 50c

You should be able to use the one you have now. However, you're going to have to reapply some thermal compound to the processor and the heatsink to prevent the processor from overheating.

In my opinion your system will get the best overall speed increase in adding mem.  Your max is 2Gb, 2 x 1GB sticks.  The MB installed has a FSB of 533 and is a Socket 478.  So any 478 socket processor will work.  If you replace the processor with a NON celeron yes you will see an increase but your will have a bottle neck with a FSB of 533.  The celeron processors have a very small cache, when you go to a non celeron your increasing your cache on the processor but have done nothing to assist the movement of the data on the MB itself.  In easy terms its like a traffic jam, you have cars that would flow nicely on a 4 lane hgwy, but only have 2 lanes available, Traffic Jam.

Money best spent on max out of the memory the system will take.  This MB also only supports PC2700 mem.   There is nothing you can do to this system what will really show a true performance increase that is noticeable.
