Game Sounds
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:44:48 PM »
Would some1 be kind enough & who has experience with AH2 to advise me as to how to properly set up my sounds in AH2>Clipboard>options>preferences>game
sounds?
Which sounds should be loud, which low & which should be left alone?  And Why?
Likewise, how would these sound settings benefit the pilot (me) or any1 else?

Thx for ur help & input   :salute

They're only personal preferences. There's no way to get a (non-gamey) advantage from them. There's no 'proper' way to set them up, really.

Adjust them as you like it. My advice is going less for any "advantage" but immersion... and avoidance of hearing damage.  ;)
It also depends very much on which soundpack (if any) you are using.

Personally, I have done not many individual adjustments. The only things I did was getting rid of the stall horn (not recommended for the new player), and tuned the annoying field siren loudness WAAAAAAAY down.

Although I would not recommend doing the above, I replaced the extremely annoying buzzing stall horn noise with a less harsh and annoying wind noise, almost kind of like the buffet noise but not really...
It still gives you the audio cue that you're approaching the stall but it's not annoying nor immersion killing (I don't think many WWII a/c had stall horns? ).
I think I got it from Mitsu's or some other old sound pack.

One thing you'll want to do immediately, which is not gamey at all, is turn down the "debris" sound. It is wayyy too loud in comparison to everything else.

Other than that, up to you. Most GV'ers like to turn down self engine sound. It really does help out there. Also, as Bubi said, you may want to replace the stall horn with a wind buffeting sound. Personal preference for some, no correct way.

The "gamey" advantage people are referring to is turning off your engine sound.  That will allow you to more precisely hear when planes are approaching you, and if your opponent is tinkering with his throttle.  It will also kill your sense of immersion, and really, by the time your skill level reaches a point where it will be terribly useful for you in a 1v1, you'll already be able to eyeball/estimate your opponent's throttle work to a fair degree, anyway.

I do turn it down a bit as I have trouble hearing muffled noises, and if I left it at the default I'd never be able to hear my flaps, friends, gear, etc.  I think I have it set at around 45 and have found it lets me keep pretending I'm actually flying a roaring aircraft without losing the ability to hear anything else.

As others have said, it's a personal preference.

Not real sure what you're sighing at when the creator the game himself has weighed in on this topic, said he doesn't see this as a big deal, and elected to give players the option to choose between immersion and slight advantage.

This is Help & Training.  If a guy wants to know how to level a fighter hanger, you answer it.

Edit - here's the link to the thread with everyone's view (there's another one in the Help & Training section entitled "Improve your SA with just a few clicks" or something like that):
