I'm more a Vodka guy personally...  My favorite is a Danish vodka called Danaka....

My favorite was Belvedere...  Never could stand Grey Goose.

My favorite for sippin’ has to be Laird’s Applejack. If I am correct, it is 35% apple brandy mixed with 65% neutral spirit. (I would guess that to mean vodka).

Unbelievably smooth with just a little apple cider aroma…

Try some of The Macallan. Best whisky I've ever had, add just a touch of water and presto.

Jameson is awesome, although I also love equally Glennfiddich and Glenlivett (sp?)

I bought a bottle for my old man, who really loves scotch, but we're both struggling with it... Laphroaig..... must be a very acquired taste..... INTENSE peat smoke flavor, a glassful with a few cubes of ice and you feel like you're drinking a rainy glass of campfire ashes mixed with scotch.
Laphroaig is one of my favorites but it needs to be sipped neat and (IMO) tastes best at room temps - maybe put a couple of drops of water at the most to bring out the flavour a bit(seriously) but definitely no ice or mix. Too much water, or ice, will produce pretty much the taste you described. Drink it neat and you get the smokey, peaty flavour with hints of taste like the ocean smells on a clean beach with an onshore breeze.
My regular drink is 12yr old Aberlour. Very smooth and tastey but a whole bunch of dollars cheaper (up here) than Laphroaig.

which reminds me....
I'm thirsty.
Cheers,

Try GLENMORANGIE.
About the best I knew. Old single malt basically is good. Drink cool with a little wee of water in it, arrrrfff!

I second that. Nothing wrong at all with Jameson either.  :aok

Biggest difference between your Irish whiskey and your Scotch whisky  - besides the spelling - is that your Irish whiskies are a lot smoother and don't have the smokiness of your classic Scotch single malts.  So fans of one aren't necessarily fans of the other.  But Jameson's is terrific, as is Black Bush, which is a little sweeter.

This deserves re-reading...  I absolutely agree with Shiv on this one...  But I still prefer a nice Danish Vodka on ice, with a twist of lime...

Glenmorangie is the Budweiser of single malts. Was drinking 15 year old Jura at the weekend. Very nice.
