Yup, the L1A1/SLR was a very popular rifle in the armed forces of many commonwealth countries (ie UK, Aussie, NZ etc). See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SLR

We have weird stocks on NZ too avoid what we call 'E-cat' classification - its a sort of MSSA law here.

Considered a rifled 12-gauge Slug gun? Drop just about anything with the new Hornady Sabot slugs.

Failing that pick up an SKS on the cheap and mount a more expensive optics package to it? As for shopping around, check out : http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_search.asp?

It's pretty darn comprehensive. Not all the prices are dead-bang accurate (no pun intended, oddly enough) but should give you a good ball park figure. I swear by anything Springfield Armory makes, and their M1A line looks mighty appealing, but not cheap. If you could find a used one of those....schwing!

Love those FN's, wish I could find one around here.

I found one for 700 bucks but the bid ends in 2 days...everything on the site that Toof posted was well over 1 grand for the M1A.

Even the R15's and R25's are 1300 still...

That's kind of why I made the suggestions I did. The fun gun can be changed in appearance with an aftermarket stock and so on. The Savage is about the most accurate low cost rifle there is and between it and the 700, I'd save the bucks and go with the Savage. Accuracy won't suffer.

Ya do know, that MOST, 99% of those FN Rifles that you see around, are teardowns Right?
Parts kits reassembled on Brazilian made IMBEL recievers, and refinished with new Parkerize...
Quality varies WIDELY, the civvie ones I've tried out weren't very good... The ppl I know who
bought them, ended up selling them soon after.. That pretty much goes for all the variations too..
Metric/Standard, L1, FAL, STG, MG724..  Don't buy one, unless ya look at it closely first...
There are a few well prepped IMBEL reciever FN units around, but they are easily over 1G...
Entreprise Arms, built the best ones.. Built their own recievers too...
Buyer Beware!!!

Ya know what ya really need, is a copy of Shotgun News.. Just one issue will have more
wholesale guns in it, that you can find on the net in many weeks of looking...
And the prices are stated clearly and openly...

And an FFL holder will charge about 10 to 20% to order it for ya.. Thats the going rate
around here anyway.. Although fellow rifle club members will often do it for zip...

Just a word of the wise, from somebody who has been around this stuff before...

Some of my old squaddies (I call them my old squaddies since I haven't played since december) Are ex-military and have access to an acronym that escapes me at the moment.

It's basically a stockpile of Garands, and many other different service rifles that can be bought by the "now civilian/ex- military". Sure someone will chime in with what that particular place is. Only a few located throughout the nation if my memory serves me. Ex-Military types have better access to it than that civilian population, but there are a few ways in as a civilian. Might be a lotta work, but to see some of the Garands these guys bought...man...beautiful pieces of work.

Rstel, Balls, where are you?!?!  :)

I almost want to say it's called the CMP....Civilian Marksmanship Program....someone correct me on this please.

Yeah I year ya...that's the one thing I don't like though, is bolt actions. I've never really liked them ...no real reason, just haven't. I'm going to have to look around at other brands though lik savage to see if there are any others I might be interested in.

Someone brought up 4 different bolt actions yesterday (243, 270, 7mm and 308) and I think since they are cheaper I'm going to go with Maverick's idea and get a bolt first. Ivebeen looking around a bit and found this one:
http://www.bigskyguns.com/Left_Handed_Rifles-Savage_Model_11_111_FL_Left_Handed.html

I'm a lefty (I can shoot a righty gun) but if it's going to be my gun I figured I might as well be able to shoot it comfortably.

I was looking at the specs on it and I saw that the regular 270 wasn't listed as this is the one I was going to get, becauseI was trying to find out how many rounds the mag would hold. I'd assume right around 4?

The .308 would be my choice as it is a standard Nato as well as very common factory round. It also has a very wide variety of slugs ranging from varmint up to some heavy ones like the 180 gr. The .308 Remington (7.62 Nato) is best with the middle to lighter weights. 165 gr and a bit lower towards the 125 gr. for hunting.  There are some really great target and hunting bullets made for it to allow you to get the most out of the rifle and ammo combination. It also has a great accuracy record.

So you suggest I get a .308 then? The only reason I was going to get a 270 was because my dad has 2 270s and that way we can have ammo for each.

That's a bit overkill for a deer, I mean if they came in that shot I'd get it, but 308 is the biggest for Savage 111 LH.
