My question is what is the point of triming your elevators down.

I do this to land.

As I bleed off speed I drop flaps which causes the plane to nose up.

So I use DOWN elev. trim to offset it and land.

Also sometimes when import. stuff gets shot off DOWN elev. trim helps to limp the bird home.

you use your elevator trim to trim the aircraft for level flight at your selected speed.

If you have a dead spot or slack in the center position of your stick you can trim down so that holding your stick back a little for neutral pitch eliminates the slack or dead spot. This allows precise aiming.

think of trimming your flight controls like having a front end alignment on your car.  If your front wheels are out of alignment, you are continuesly have to make corrections.  For example if your car is always pulling to the right you have to hold left turning pressure on the wheel to keep it going straight.
Same thing with an airplane.  It an airplane is out of trim, it will want to turn or climb or dive and you will be fighting that with your joystick all the time.  By trimming, you are able to fly 'hands off' and the airplane is less inclined to wander about the sky.

Ailerons are the control surfaces that allow you to roll, not turn(pitch). Flaps do provide lift to increase your turn radius in exchange for some drag (loss of airspeed).

I have used ailerons to help turn before, although not a phenominal difference, this accompanied with flaps do help. Every little bit of turning ability helps when you're being harrassed by a better turning plane.

AIELRONS don't turn your airplane. they roll it, so it can turn, with use of the elevator.

Your planes lift changes with speed. Low speed may require trimming elevator up to maintain your set altitude. As your speed increases so does your lift. Depending on the plane this lift will become great enough at some speed to start climbing even when all controls are neutral. At this point you will have to trim down to maintain a set altitude.
