All out on gears or not
« on: July 31, 2009, 01:54:58 AM »
Hi guys !

So I'm driving back to Seattle from KY, good god it's a long drive. Only 1500 miles to go! weet. During this long drive I bough a few audio book, all about WWII air combat. I've been itching to play ace high again, last 8 months I stayed in a hotel that blocked connection to AH, but not WoW (go figure). I bypassed the connection problem by buyin my own 56k connection, but it costed me like 150$ that week to be online for 30 hrs, with long distance call!

Aniwho, now that I have to start AH all over again, I was wondering if it's worth it to buy a rudder pedal, joystick, throttle and the IRtracker. I used to play AH 2 w/ just ajoystick that has a view hat, 4 buttons and a throttle w/ it. Since I'm starting all over again, I'm willing to try the new gears. I'm just not sure if it's worth 300-400$, if I can do the same w/ just an old joystick I had.

I would say if you can afford it buy it. The worse that can happen is you spent some money & your game play probably improved.

I started on AW3, I think. I personally have been through 2 Logitechs, and 5 Saiteks (second X52), and of all the gear I've owned, the only piece that still works like it did new, is a CH stick that was used in AW before I started playing (it's a gameport version, ffs!). It would have been cheaper, in the long term, to have bought a complete CH setup initially. And of course, you can use a stick in many games aside from AH, or sell it should you tire of gaming.

Better make sure your machine will run the new update before you spend all the quid on periphs!

Hard to take myself seriously now... but do yourself a favor, Yenny, and buy a CH stick.  You'll save money in the long run because other sticks wear out and break.  I've had my CH stick for 12 years now.  The only downside to CH is that their joysticks are made for big hands, while their pedals seem to be made for tiny legs and feet.  So while the bottom of my hand never makes it to the hand rest if I want to reach the pov hat, my knees sometimes scrape the underside of my desk.

Hey Yenny! Double-check to make sure your PC can handle the game before you drop $300 on controllers!

I also recommend the CH stuff.  I haven't had it as long as some, but even if it breaks, I know I'll be able to buy the same model again (and won't have to relearn something completely different).  I can't say that about some other brands.

You can look forward to a few weeks or horrible embarrassment, but you'll get used to the new set up soon enough.

Looking forward to flying against you again

So I'm driving back to Seattle from KY, good god it's a long drive.

I feel your pain on this one Yenny.  I moved from Olympia, WA to Orlando, FL 10 years ago.  Long drive is an understatement!  Be safe Sir, and we will see you when you get back into the AH skies.
