Good New England Seafood Restaurant?
« on: July 31, 2009, 10:58:47 AM »
Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has found a very good seafood restaurant in the New England region?  A squad mate has recently posted a picture of some delicious looking Fish & Chips and I've been craving it ever since.

I'm just outside of Hartford, CT, but would be willing to go as far as Cape Cod or Block Island if it was that worth it.

I'm primarily looking for a good Fish & Chips or something like snapper.  I don't care for  scallops or clams, but am a fan of calamari and love shrimp.

Does anyone have a favorite place they'd recommend?

Too many to list, really. If there's one thing New England does well, it's seafood. You shouldn't have to go too far to find a good restaurant, they're everywhere... and they're all a little different from each other, so it makes the search a little more interesting if you're looking for a specific style. Some of the best little seafood places can be found at local ice cream stands. Check the 'net or your local paper. If you're looking for more of a sit-down gourmet thing, then head for the larger towns. Even a chain like Legal is pretty good.

Too bad you're not into clams and scallops, because that's where this area really shines.

Yeah, I've found as long as I stay away from major chains (Red Lobster's) the food is very good regardless.  I was just wondering if someone has a personal favorite of favorites.

I could tell you where to get the best pretzel on earth (Frenchy's, Crown Point, NY - no salt, side of cheese) but it would never show up in a paper :)

Okay, specifics... Best lobster roll I've had in my life was at Huot's restaurant in Saco, ME. Best fish and chips was at the Chart House, Boston, on the wharf.

My Oldest sister lives in Mystic... The last time we went over to visit, she took us to a place called "The Giant Lobster House"... Had a GIANT lobster in a tank, appropriate!!!
Man, GREAT clams, Beer battered deepfried Roundhouse clams... Bacon wrapped scallops, lemon pepper/butter broiled... WOW!!!
Cod and Flounder fillets too... Awesome!!!

We have pretty good seafood in WA state too, Shrimp, Crab, Geoduck, and Salmon... Razor clams too, but not as good as those Roundhouse clams..
But man o man, They KNOW seafood in CT!!!  Just a diff style, GOOD TOO!!!

I ate till I was in absolute misery!!! Couldn't help it!!!

Thanks for the link! I think I'll check out that Carmen Anthony's in Avon first (about 10 minutes away and has some sort of "Great 8" rating).  Not quite by the shore, but we'll see what happens.

I'm also starting to think perhaps I don't like clams because of the Red Lobster complex...  I may have to experiment :aok

Check the following link: http://www.brownslobster.com/

Nothing fancy, BUT dam good (sea)food, reasonably priced.  We hit the place at least 3 times/week when camping at Salisbury State park.

I had to go to a programming school for metal in Hartford , Conn and the instructor there got us an address in Mystic for a place called Abbotts which does Lobster , clams , and the like . I got to say it was awesome , a relaxed place and you can take a cooler of beer if you want . right next door is a place called Costellos which also does Oysters , clams and such too. I had a blast there and it was about 45 minutes away or so from Hartford and a great drive very scenic .

Vudak, there is a place I go for fish in East Windsor. Here is their homepage;

http://www.mainefishmarket.com/

Whatever you do, don't go to Chowder Pot.  It is all ambiance and the food isn't as good as it used to be.

All sorts of fish are sold as snapper that aren't the real thing, especially rockfish.  If it is real snapper, they are drastically over-fished and also high in mercury, FYI.

My favorite has always been George's in Narraganset, RI. Their fish and chips with the summer flounder is probably in the top 3 things I have ever tasted. (1 hour 50 minutes from Hartford)

If you like lobster, The Wharf Tavern in Warren, RI has 100 different types of lobster (the lobster rangoon is incredible). Its quite expensive there though. (2 Hours from  Hartford)

Out on the cape the only really good one I ever went to was Baxter's in Hyannis. They are best known for fried clams, but have many other things as well. (2 Hours 55 minutes from Hartford)

Lindsey's in Wareham, MA is good. My girlfriend said the shrimp was incredible there. (2 hours 15 minutes)
