Wing rip?
« on: September 02, 2001, 02:48:00 PM »
Are wing rips modeled correctly?  I remember in AWIII that one of the ways to get away from planes like the N1K and the Ki-84 was to dive away, build up speed and then start pulling back on the stick.  Those planes would rip their wings trying to pull any Gs going that fast.  I used to fly the N1K a lot and it took a very light touch not to rip the wings and even then I ripped quite a few.

Was it too easy to rip wings in AWIII?  People were doing it all the time there, but you rarely hear about it happening here.  Before I get flamed...I'm not saying AWIII was right and AH is wrong, just wondering if they are modeled correctly.  I used to think the Japenese planes were fragile because of all the wing rips, they seem pretty sturdy in here.

Hint,

Performance of a plane in a computer game does not necessarily reflect reality.

The P51 used to shed it wings quite regularly several versions ago but it's been toughened up since.   It is possible though you have to pretty much dilberately try to do it.  I damaged my wings in a pull out last week in a hellcat but I was going like hell at the time and had to haul back on the stick to keep from hitting the ground.  Either the G's damged my wing or somehow the flak got me.  I heard a the stree sound followed by a BANG and when I came to I was pointing up with a big hole in my right wing.  <shrug>

I understand that Mav.  I also understand that the goal of a good flight sim is to be as realistic as possible.  That is why I'm asking about realistic wing rips.  Aces High has done an excellent job on their aircraft and I'm wondering if the aircraft in AWIII ripped their wings too easily or is wing rip something they are still working on here.

Spitfire had the thinnest wing of any WW2 fighter, and it still took 13G+ to rip them...

juzz,

The thickness in the wing is a very small reflection of how strong the wing is.  The internal structure is what is going to end all decide it.  In my work, we see the insides of wings on quite a few occasions.  It is not surprising that jap planes can not pull the g's that a P-47 or Cat can, the design philosophies are quite different.  As for the P-51 being a weak wing, think again.  When North American was trying to determine the strength of the wing, it took over 250% more of the max wing loading it was rated for.  Guess that means NA built em right!  ;)  The point I am trying to make is that US aircraft have a reputation for being tough, survivable aircraft, jap aircraft have the rep of paper machee, and Brit a mix of the two.  The Russians, hell they never carried a philosophy through from one design to the next.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

I rip the wings all the time in AH's B-26.  Reminds me alot of the A-26 in AW.

Don't think I've ever ripped the wings in a fighter in AH, though.  Gonna have to go try.  :)
