Hi,

Thank you, HTC, for another version. I've already downloaded patch 3 and everything is working fine. My machine never was a hot-rod so, I have never enjoyed the visual pleasures of high-res. Not a problem to me, I allways privileged smoothness and frame rate. Who enjoyed 2D animation will understand, surely.

So what brings me to you is that I would like to improve whatever I could my balance between visual feedback and frame rates now that the terrains evolved. But I am going completely nuts with so many variables. You have your GC settings, AH settings, all sort of strange, technical terms and tweaks and I'm completely lost...

Status: I´m flying low-res and all AA, AF disabled or software controled. I'm using Default settings in AH Clipboard Setup (Detail=50%, Terrain=20%) no fancy stuff, only Bump Map available. After fiddling with the sliders, default is ok. I'm doing between 18/20 fps (in tower!) to 110 fps, tops. Normally, between 60 and 90 fps. In big furballs, frame rate may go down to 30's but I'm not suffering any stuttering. Sometimes the sun takes a while to load...Of course, the landscape is not very interesting but I spot a dot at the same distance that I used to before and I do not feel hampered. Strangely, my screen resolution is a bit better than AH's. Is this a potential conflict? I'm forcing the card to a 32 bit colour output. Is this necessary? If I lower it, do I gain anything? I went from 3 pre-rendered frames to 4 but I didn't noticed any significant difference...

I know I should invest in more RAM and a new graphics card. In the meantime, what can I do to get faster frame rate and see more trees? Maybe you have some ideas a technologicaly impaired like myself can tweak without burning the old 'puter to the ground...

Here's my DxDiag (first time ever, uau!):

Hi,

Just remembered another thing. Even increasing pre-rendered frames from 3 to 4, my video memory usage doesn't seem to increase, keeps using 50% of the 64 Mb the card has... Should't I be using it to the fullest and give the processor some room to breathe? Or use it to increase detail keeping frame rate? Or keep detail and increase frame rate? I'm totally clueless...

Cheers,

Memory: 512MB RAM - Need more ram for sure, if you can punch it to 2 Gigabytes do it.

Driver Date/Size: 3/24/2004 - way outdated, get a newer driver from Nvidia.

NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 - it's really old so even with the updated driver it will probably still have issues.

Current Mode: 1152 x 864 (32 bit) (85Hz) - pushing the refresh rate on that card way too hard (probably the monitor too) gonna burn it out, no more than 70 - 75Hz at that resolution.
