Game is 200% improved and if you don't like I am having a bottle of 8% real ale to drown your sorrow's.
I wonder what AH will be like in 10 years time.

I like any fights that occur over water.  Even watching other peoples' fights from a perch looks so much better.  Also, I like how the ack doesn't fire like a fire house any more.

I'm under the impression that this update included some core changes that can now be used to make core differences in the coming months/years.  It might seem like a downgrade to some right now, but I bet it won't in 6-12 months.

The thing I like most are the new thatched beach huts for the island natives.

The thing I like the least is that there are no native girls in grass skirts to populate them.       :(

Don't you just love having terrain with only 3 colors in it? Super Nintendo graphic people FTW.

We lost a great many things.

LOST
• beach obstacles
• hedges
• decent ground clutter - someone even slaughtered all the sheep!
(looks like I'm driving across the sargasso sea when I'm in a GV)
• structures and terrain for GV's
• hills (can't find any, but that might just be me)
• wakes (unless you can run the game with details)
• decent water (with detail turned down the tiling looks hideous)
• trouble-free performance

I'm, sorry to say this but the terrain is far less interesting
now.  It looks kike a photo from the sky but thats about it
and the price to obyain it was, imho, too high.

Here's what trading in those things and completely shafting
the GV guys yielded:

GAINED
• shiny water with kewl reflections (if you can run at that level)
• 2 planes (that didn't require an entire upgrade to get, BTW)
• headaches
• anything I missed here??

And you know that these things were lost permanently instead of being removed to eliminate variables in troubleshooting?

OMFG!!! Someone gets it!!!!  :aok

Holy cow! 2 people get it... waaaaait a minute. You're staff! You don't count.  ;) :lol

Honestly, don't get me wrong, I truly do feel bad for the people who can't play this game the way they are used to. ESPECIALLY those with "ok" machines who are having problems (keep in mind an "ok" machine these days is a core2duo 2.4GHz chip with an 8600 or faster video card and 1-2Gb of ram... that is NOT high end specs anymore). However, the HTC crew has had a history of fixing and updating things quickly once they implement a major change. They also have shown a history of not making "knee jerk" decisions based upon the noises of a few, since most of their large decisions are concentrated on trying to improve for the many. This update isn't just about "this week", but about the future, and a lot of your concerns may be addressed in the future. A period of time after a major patch in where things are in an "in progress" state is common for MMOs, but none that I've ever been involved in has the actual core STAFF of the MMO answering questions and trying to help.

:salute to the HTC staff for trying, and keeping trying.

Delta,

Just out of curiosity, what would you like done to improve AH2 for the” lower-end gamers”?

That's a fair question.

First we need to understand what it means to improve the game.
To do that we need to define some terminology: game
and environment.  They are not the same thing.

The game consists of planes, vehicles and the dynamics
of gameplay like strategy, coordinated gameplay, flight
model and other aspects of actual operations.  Even the base
layout, number of barracks, fuel, etc. are part of the game
as they affect actual gameplay.

The environment graphics, by contrast, are the virtual world
that the game takes place in.  They are 'not' the game.

My whole point here is that the visuals used to create
the environment shouldn't cause actual gameplay to suffer.

My related concern (other than not being able to enjoy
all these visuals) is that the "game" has suffered because
of the focus on environment and not on gameplay.
While I appreciate the work that was done on the game's
mechanics (flight models, bug fixes, etc.) I wish more
attention has been given to adding planes and maps
that would not have posed a serious technical hurdle to the
existing player base.

Easyscor, you above all people should understand
the opportunity cost that this new version required, seeing
that you are involved in events and all.  What would have
made for better scenarios, shiny water or new planes like
the Ju-52, Betty bomber, Japanese Raiden, PBY, or even
the oft-reviled B-29, etc.?

How about additional vehicles like the M-10, M-24,
Japanese tank, etc.  These would have been invaluable
for scenarios and FSO events. Gratefully, we got the 2
new planes but my argument is that we could have had much
more and with no technical headaches.

Imagine the player response if the last update had
presented us with 4 new maps, 8 new planes and a couple
of more vehicles.  It would have been universally enthusiastic
but more than that, none of the current subscribers would
have been tossed to the curb because their systems
couldn't handle the new release.

From my reading of the forums the chief desires of the
community for a long time has been for new planes and maps.
We got 2 new planes, no new maps and a host of technical
issues related to the newest release.

Moreover, improvements to the film viewer and mission editor
are long overdue but again, the time that could have been spent
on these issues was instead used for shiny water and
photorealistic terrain (sans topographic features).

Please understand, I didn't post this to slap anyone down
but to highlight my contention that in actual fact nothing
significant about the 'game' has improved.  The only game
benefits that this version presented us with were two new planes.
Sure, the virtual world that this game takes place in is
nicer to look at (if your machine is able) but that very
eye candy has actually caused gameplay (the 'game) to suffer.

Let me conclude with these thoughts.  First, I applaud
HiTech and crew for the quick introduction of patches
to fix some of the issues that have been caused by the
new version.  My 'game' play has improved somewhat because
of these efforts and I hope they will continue but in the
future I hope they will concentrate on improving the
'game' and not the environment.

My hope for myself is that the 'game' will once again be
playable for me and that I will continue to enjoy this pasttime
that I have become addicted to over the past 7 years.

And you know that these things were lost permanently instead of being removed to eliminate variables in troubleshooting?

I can only look at the past to determine that Waffle.
IIRC, the last terrain change featured all of these elements
at its introduction.  Why would I expect otherwise
this time around?

Furthermore, since everyone has access to these forums,
would it be be beyond the pale to declarative state what
you have just implied rather than suggest it as a possibility?

Surely, some dialogue on these matters from you would
go a long way towards calming players who feel that they
are being shut out of the game they love.

So, is that the plan?  Will all of these things be added back in?

That's a fair question.

First we need to understand what it means to improve the game.
To do that we need to define some terminology: game
and environment.  They are not the same thing.

I actually put to you that both ARE the same thing, or at least, very tightly related.
Improved graphics do improve the game. Case in point... the complaints in this thread about "zelda" like graphics. If graphics weren't part of the game, why are people complaining about the zelda like graphics on lower end settings?

The game consists of planes, vehicles and the dynamics
of gameplay like strategy, coordinated gameplay, flight
model and other aspects of actual operations.  Even the base
layout, number of barracks, fuel, etc. are part of the game
as they affect actual gameplay.

The environment graphics, by contrast, are the virtual world
that the game takes place in.  They are 'not' the game.

However, a couple of the earlier complaints you made were the lack of anti-vehicle objects on beaches and lack of hills. Wouldn't those both be environmental objects that affect gameplay?

My whole point here is that the visuals used to create
the environment shouldn't cause actual gameplay to suffer.

A statement I agree with, but I feel we'd disagree with what makes "actual gameplay to suffer"

But at the same time, to improve gameplay for the future, some of these significant hurdles would need to take place. It's like climbing a hill/mountain/rock-face. Sometimes, you look ahead of you and you see that your chosen path is not the safest path you could have taken. You have to climb back down a few paces to shift where you are, to get a better grasp and angle to climb back up.

How about additional vehicles like the M-10, M-24,

of more vehicles.  It would have been universally enthusiastic
but more than that, none of the current subscribers would
have been tossed to the curb because their systems
couldn't handle the new release.

There's absolutely no garantee we would have received any of those items. Yes, new planes and vehicles would always be nice, but there may reasons for this terrain and lighting upgrade that, while looking like nothing more than a graphics update to the end users (us), might be a change to give HTC options that were not available for them before to improve the game in ways that just weren't possible with the old system.

From my reading of the forums the chief desires of the
community for a long time has been for new planes and maps.
We got 2 new planes, no new maps and a host of technical
issues related to the newest release.

host of technical issues for SOME, but not ALL people. In fact, I'd be willing to put money on it that >50% of the paying player base have NOT had significant technical issues. Why? Because HTC knows that putting out an update that would cause >50% of his clientele to no longer be able to use his services is financial suicide.

If the only change with the new version was graphics, and you stated above that graphics do not equal gameplay, how did your gameplay suffer?

Let me conclude with these thoughts.  First, I applaud
HiTech and crew for the quick introduction of patches
to fix some of the issues that have been caused by the
new version.  My 'game' play has improved somewhat because

:salute Delta. Please do not misunderstand my response, as I am not trying to make fun of you or belittle you in the least. I'm just trying to point out that there IS another point of view of this situation and through your frustration, you might not be seeing the forest through the trees, so to speak. While the problems right now may seem insurmountable, I have faith that HTC is doing this for the betterment of their company, the game, and their players.

Can always do what I do when frustrated by an object (such as a game). Drink a beer.   :aok
