Question for Players with stutters
« on: July 31, 2009, 02:16:31 PM »
Skuzzy had me try this, and I would ask that y'all do this as well.

Jump into an arena and sit for a min. to let everything load.

Pull up your clipboard map and right click it picking Net Status.

Now jump to the tower of a base you have not been yet.

Hit F5 to jump externally out of the tower (or F3)

Hit F8 and then use your hat switch and look around doing a full 360 of the tower while looking at your Net Stats.
(I suppose you can do this w/o the F5/F8 but that's just what I do)

I am curious about two things.

1) Are you stuttering when doing that 1st 360 and then smoothing out.

2) In Net Stats, at the top (Variance) are you spiking in that 1st 360 until it smooths out.

I bring this up because I want to know if all the people that are having stutters are experiencing the same thing, and this is a way to find "common ground" for all of us so HiTech can figure out what is going on.

Something I noticed while doing this is when I am spiking/stuttering in that 1st 360 look around my red Variance line jumps up ABOVE the spikes, and then after it smooths out it drops back down to normal.  My red line is actually moving.  Not sure what this means so I thought I'd add it.

Will do this later tonight...I have already been waiting longer until my FPS is up to 75 before launching anywhere anyways.

Smokey23, my guess is you have a video card tied into the CPU (ie integrated) or you're using the software control panel that came with an ATI card.

I could be wrong, however.

and 5 minutes later

(Image removed from quote.)

That is somewhat similar to what I see net stat wise.

Right when I get in the arena I get a similar saw tooth as you do.  (looks almost the same.  in the 1st pick the most recent 2 saw tooths is really close to what I see)  That will eventually smooth out and my Variance is flat.

But...

Every time I jump into a tower I get a spike.  When I then look around and stutter, stutter, stutter for that 1st 360 around I get smaller spikes untill it smooths out.

As I am flying and the terrain is loading I get small spikes and a pause/stutter as it loads which show as small spikes in Variance.

It is really noticable on a CV.  I get a steady spike as the CV moves and new terrain is loaded.

What is kinda odd is I have detailed water OFF but I still get the loading spikes/pause/stutter even when on the water away from land.

I caught HiTech in the LW Friday after the patch and he said he "thinks" he has a fix for it so i'm hopefull.

(mentioned not loading vertex shaders 'right' or some such thing I know nothing about...)

Fingers crossed...

My screen looks most similar to smokey23's first screenshot. Having said that my stutter problem is more of a 'micro' stutter that does not make the game unplayable but is noticable.

When running this test the most noticable thing was when doing the 2nd 360 the airfield texture took a while to load (10 seconds) but frame rate and stutters were not affected.

ok, By doing this I found a few things very interesting. First, for some reason I can not take a screen shot....  Not for sure why but I couldn't take one to post to post what my net status looked like, so I will draw below.

 1                  -              -                -               -
                   - -            - -             - -             - -
                   -   -          -   -           -   -           -   -
                   -     -        -     -         -     -         -     -
 0     ----------       ------       -------       -------       -------

-1

The Other interesting thing is that I decided maybe something loaded wrong so I decided I would just restart the game and see if I couldn't take a screen shot then.  at that point (still unable to take a screen shot), my net status looked like this.

1

                           -                            -
0        ------------  -------------------   -----------------------------

-1

Someone please explain me why there was such a difference.  To me this just adds to the stutter mystery.

Common ground found.

As soon as i switch to a new base the variance in delay spikes to over 1.   As i am looking around, each stutter corresponds to a small spike in variance around the same height as in texastc316's  picture.

I realized with advance terrain unchecked i can play with no stutters, so at least there is a solution until it's worked out.
