Kinda need to know what you have now, or your Motherboard spec to direct you to a good card.

You're gonna raise the chicken or the egg arguments with this one. ATI vs. Nvidia. I personally like ATI. I have the 4870 and never an issue with it or any other ATI card I have had. Others will disagree and have had problems. I also know people who have had issues with Nvidia.

I'm sure if you search in the hardware and software section you will finds tons of info or Google it there are millions of pages of reviews and comparisons.

All comes down to your personal preference, your comps capabilities and your wallet.

The difference between ATI and Nvidia in truth is no different then a 1000HP/900ibs 4cyl and a 1000hp/900ibs V8.

Both are at the same HP/torq, they just get the power in different ways. It is totally personal preference, game coding that can support one better then another, and system specs.

In honesty I was going to give you examples of each, if I find out what specs your motherboard requires.

It will totally depend on your system/motherboard and your power supply.

Post your computer make and model number in the Hardware and Software forums for help.

The motherboard is the large flat board that everything in your computer is attached to.

It's the main circuit board that connects everything else in your computer.  Depending on how it was built (it's specs) it may limit what you can do in terms of upgrades.

If the computer you have was bought from a store, give us the model number, as well as the company that makes the computer. Then we can help you.

there are a couple low power cards out now. I go a evga 9600GT LP and went from 10 FR to 75. Ended up paying $45 after rebate and amazon $30 off for getting their credit card.

there is also a 9800 LP out just needs larger power supply

Your computer will accept a PCIe x16 video card which is the current standard.  Unfortunately your computer comes with a 180W power supply.  To run most modern video cards you will need a minimum 350W power supply with 500W being a better choice.

A good video card will likely run $50 or more and a new power supply will double that.

You also have 2 DDR2 memory sockets that accept DDR2 667 or DDR2 800 memory.  A cheaper alternative would be to go to 2 Gb of RAM if you don't already have that much.  DDR2 memory needs to be installed in matched pairs so if you had to replace both DIMMs it would cost around $25-30.
