Not true.

in the arena settings there is ColorLightNight and if you move the sliders all to the right you get the appearance of night time but it is pretty much as clear as the day.

ran many a special event like that and most players loved it.

For instance, Coral sea. Near the end it got dark, but I could see fine. It looked great. Was a lot of fun.

Because you can't see anything.

Night as presented in World War II Online is very effective and
adds a new dimension of difficulty to aerial combat.  Not
too dark at all and no need to play around with your
monitor's gamma setting - it looks like a night lit by a full moon.
Plenty of light to see by.

I think that HiTech should revisit the night setting and perhaps
adopt an approach similar to WWIIOL and see how it "flies" ;)
