Should a WWII fighter be able to loop endlessly?
« on: December 05, 2001, 05:32:00 AM »
I remember the old N1K2 debate. Now, was it a problem related to the George or no WWII fighter should be able to do it?

I'm not talking about a series of loops when you have plenty of E (altitude and/or speed). I'm talking about an endless series of loops when you are on the deck.

Are the engine power and the E gained in the descending part of the loop enuff to allow endless loops? (Yes, yes, I know ... provided you dont have anything to throw all over the cockpit and the windscreen   ;))

"And one of the finest aircraft I ever flew was the Macchi C.205. Oh, beautiful. And here you had the perfect combination of italian styling and german engineering .... it really was a delight to fly ... and we did tests on it and were most impressed." - Captain Eric Brown

Why not... if you have the alt to gain the E needed you should be able to loop till you puke, right?

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

Generally speaking for a WW2 plane, above 3G = lose E, Below 3G = gain E

...assuming you are pulling as tight a loop as you can with the stall horn on all the time.  This means you gain E going over the top when speed < ~150 or so.  As long as you don't go over 200 mph or so through the bottom, you will break even.  Only a few planes can loop from 200 mph.

In a properly flown competetion style loop, you should exit the loop at the same altitude, heading and speed as it was entered.

I'll make sure to remember that the next time I've got 6 Spitfires on my six.  :)
