Plumbit my wife has had Diabetic Retinopathy for the past 19 years.  Hers was also caught fairly early, but I do remember her first lazier treatment was over 1000 zaps.  She had to have a couple of follow up treatments with lazier, but in the last 17 years or so she had not had to have any.  Hers was also brought on by being a Juvenile Diabetic.  She did suffer some vision loss, but in time the brain will compensate for some of the loss vision by filling in the gaps.  At least that's how she explains it.  The most important thing is to continue to have regular exams to ensure there is no new leakage.  Also keep your blood sugar in check, this is probably the most important thing.  She has her eyes checked every 3-4 months.

Good Luck,

Fred

Thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers, they mean more than you know!

BMGS - In response, I am to have 1500-2000 burns eventually in both of my eyes, unfortunately I can only take so much at a time. According to the Doc up to 900 at a time is about the max I can endure. There is much swelling in the eyes so the injections don't always take and then I can feel the burns, it is not enjoyable. So far what has been done has not been enough, per the doc. He told me I may end up going to a retina specialist.

I appreciate you sharing about your wife, it is encouraging to hear of someone who has gone through this process and came out fine. The fear of not knowing what to expect with each step is foremost in my mind. Thanks again!

Talk about timing, as I was reading your reply my wife walked into my office, so I asked her if she remembers how many zaps she received during the treatments.  She told me her left eye she received a total right at 1700 and her right eye was less than a thousand.  Were going back many years, but we think there was a total of three treatments over a couple of weeks, with the last only being a few zaps.  She did have one eye that required more treatment.  The good news after the first round of treatments she has been stable since.  Were lucky that her doctor not only being an Ophthalmologist is also a Retina Specialist.  I will encourage you to still see a Retina Specialist.

This is a scary thing and my wife was diagnosed with this at a fairly young age and has had to live with it for the many years since. The good news is that they were able to stabilize her and she has been able to lead a fairly normal life.

Hang in there.
