Yeah any of those .50 cal pistols seem to be beasts.... I had always wanted a Desert Eagle till i fired their .50 version the recoil was just insane so hopefully S&W fixed that with their models... I still much rather own a Barrett. :) :salute

One of the worst pieces of junk I ever held.

The reason for the recoil is the poor design, the barrel is up too high compared to the grip.

The "muzzle brake" mostly makes it loud, it doesn't help recoil much, if at all.

The first ones were notorious for touching off rounds NOT under the firing pin.

And I LIKE Recoil, and noise. The guys at the local gun shops call me "recoil junkie" because most every gun I own is a large caliber, and most of the large caliber guns are magnums as well.

But the S&W 500 magnum shoots like crap. A 454 Casull is a better gun, although slightly less powerful, a 475 or 500 Linebaugh to Bowen maximum will shoot better, carry better, and come very close in matching it for power.

You can buy a NEW Barrett for $10K, the bolt version even cheaper.

Insane?

The .50 DE kicks about the same as a 6 inch .44 magnum.  Stiff, but not insane.  My .44 magnum DE kicks about the same as my 6 inch .357, my wife can handle it fine (though she can't pull the slide back).

Want insane?  The .454 Casull is nasty.  I've also fired a Thompson Contender chambered in a 7mm, uck. This S&W should be pretty harsh too, better get it magna-ported....

I have fired a 6" barrel chambered in Casull, one handed with full on hunting loads, and no barrel porting to boot.

Its not terrible, its even down right 22ish with the .45 ACP rounds firing through it.

I owned a Barret .50, specifically the M-82.  It was a lot of fun to shoot.  Never had a need for the semi auto function, and all it did was cost accuracy in the end.  When the gun market went crazy after the messiah was elected, I sold it for almost $14k.  Took the money, and paid off my truck ($5.5k), and bought a new Armalite .50, slapped the same optics on it, along with a purchase of 1000 rnds of .50 BMG, 2000 hulls, 10k primers, 10k bullets, and a new case, scope cover, some scope lens and a few other goodies, and still had almost a grand left over.

In reality, the new weapon is an excellent piece of hardware, and I have no more truck note.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

You cannot run fast enough to give me any weapon with a ported barrel. It magnifies muzzle blast by at least an order of magnitude. If you hold a 454 Casull properly, even a full house load does not recoil terribly.

Whatever you do, do not hold any handgun like that idiot Jan Libourel or whatever his name is, the gun writer and "reporter" on TV. It's amusing to watch him. The gun passes his ear and nearly reaches his shoulder in recoil.

If you'll wear ear plugs and ear muffs as well, take a firm grip (not a white knuckle death grip), and a good stance, and allow the gun to rise and roll, as opposed to trying to force the gun down and fight the recoil, you'll find recoil is not nearly so bad. Recoil is a great deal more between your ears than between your hands. getting the noise down helps as well. That's why porting makes recoil seem worse to most people.

Most people get cheap hearing protection, take a serious death grip on the gun, lock their arms, yank the trigger and try to force the gun forward and down. You will not force the gun forward and down. You'll just make it feel like it is kicking harder.

I like CZ's advertising campaign for their pistols better than S&W's advertising.

Their ads really make you take notice of their handguns:

I've never shot a 6 in .44 mag -- guessing something like the S&W Model 29?

I do know that my .50 DE isn't fun to shoot so much anymore because of the recoil, especially if it's at the end of a long day of shooting.  It just hurts.

It used to be a lot of fun, when I could shoot it indoors, but being in the S. Florida humidity, sweaty hands and that recoil either hurt my wrists or make me screw up my form and cause stovepipes because I'm either limp-wristing it or pushing on the bottom of the magazine.

I find my other guns much more enjoyable.

As for that S&W500 -- that's like a last resort if a Grizzly is about to maul you.  :lol

S&W 629 Mountain gun, works just fine for me.. More is not needed!!!
But I don't hunt Cape Buffalo, or Kodiak Browns, with a Handgun either...
When I'm out followin a herd of Elk, often see Mountain Lions doing the
same thing.. Its comforting to have a .44mag on my hip about then!!!
They WILL attack a horse and rider, have done so in my area many times..
They are absolutely fearless animals!!! Most times, you'll never see it comin!!!

I don't really see the point of a pistol that powerful, with a barrel that
short... Most of the extra power available is wasted in muzzle blast!!!

But, I suppose bigger is better for some ppl... I could crack a common
joke about ppl who feel the need for GIGANTIC handguns... But don't
really want to start a flame fest on sunday morning... LOL!!!
