Was a little bored, so I picked up a pencil and paper...

and started doodling around.

I finally found out what I wanted to draw, and I got this:

I plan to hopefully put on some markings on the P-40.

I honestly think it's the best thing that I've ever drawn.  :lol And it's not even all that good.

Only thing I'm having real trouble with is the propeller placements, looks a little out of place.

Prop placement is fine, it's just bent from me trying to land.

Well, it's better than the P-40s I would draw freshman year in Bio. They looked more like F-86s, with a propeller and a air scoop. I really like the way you did the canopy.

Yea, I tried to have it going over a smoking betty... but I don't think I did too good on the G4M itself.

right now, I'm just thinking of how to make good stars for the wings and what not.

And in reply to you Ink, it was really a sketch, I draw light so when I mess up, I can erase and leave not as much of a trace. Of course, there's some spots where you can openly see where I tried to erase. It will be big on the betty.

My next 2 planes I'm gonna try are gonna be Me-109 and the P-47. Probably just flying in on their own, since it's hard to make realistic smoke, with a pencil and pretty much no artwork experience (if that makes sense).

When making smoke, lay down some lead on a separate piece of paper, a palette if you will, get some of that lead on your finger, and then rub it onto the paper in looping motions. Make sure to only get a little lead, and do it very lightly so that you can have various values. Of course, you could just ask one of the local art teachers if you could have a tortellon, as they are usually very cheap and help immensely when trying to get lead onto the paper in small increments (Knows from the shading unit in Design and Drawing. Doing those flowers was a pain!). Use the tortellon as if it were your finger when getting the lead onto the paper. Also, you can use the tortellon to smooth out the textures in the shaded areas so you cannot see the various pencil strokes.

Here's how I finished it:

I found out that the opposite wing of the betty never seemed to look right. Gave me a LOT of trouble. Same with the cockpit alignment. I somehow got it right, but it doesn't look how it should.

#1 rule of art:

Reference.
Gotta have it.

Ideally a photo of the plane yer doing at the attitude you want to portray.

I built a decent plastic model, painted in generic silver, and took a pix of them at the angle I wanted to paint.
Awesome reference.

Markings on the plane model help, but .. not real hard to layout on a sketch.

Then .. once yer sketch looks good enough, ink it.. and erase pencil after ink is well dry, using a soft eraser.

Currently working on F4U, having a LOT of trouble with the bent wing. Just can't seem to make it right...

Edit:

I can get the cockpit and everything right, the damn wing is really hard, because I have to make it thinner, so it looks just like a thinner wing

I'm working on a Corsair right now too, they're just tough.  The Hellcat is much easier, but I'm not too far into that one yet.  Keep plugging away at it and you'll get there.  The trick is to know when it's as good as it's going to get and any more work will just screw it up.
