new agp graphics card
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:17:52 PM »
I was thinking about grabbing a new agp card, and I was just wondering what other people thought. Im not willing to upgrade my mobo or anything else really, the only game Im really going to play is ac2, and thats all I need it for. The only reason I stopped was because my old card wore out after about 2 years of abuse. Any advice on what a good AGP card would be for ac2 please let me know.

I'm not much of an ATI fan but one of these rigs might be a good choice over the current Nvidia AGP selection:

At least it's DDR3 memory...256bit...and Sapphire makes a decent product.

ok upon inspecting my power supply it says 300w, with a fuse rateing of 200w, whats up with that, that doesnt even sound like it could support the old card. So now its looking pretty bad for this old computer. I suppose a new 500w power supply would cost me even more money. ever heard of the  XfX geforce 6200? Im just not looking to spend much and I dont expect a whole lot. but now im kinda leaning towords a whole new system. I mean ac2 ran ok with my old geforce fx 5200, but it finally crapped out.

The best AGP card on the market is the ATI HD 3850 512meg.  It's a pretty good card but you need at least a 550w power supply at the minimum.  I know the system specs list a 400w PSU but it's inaccurate.

It would only cost you between $50 and $65 for a decent 550 watt power supply...if you get both from Newegg...you're talking $160 (???) to keep your current system running for a while longer (until something else craps out) and you can save your money to build a better one.

Dude...don't buy a boxed system... :O

If you're going to buy a prebuilt...at least give Tildeath a call first...otherwise build your own (you don't need bleeding edge but you don't want to cut yourself short either)....worst case is to buy a good bare bones unit then add the better components to it...just don't waste your money on a boxed system.

how much do you think around i could save by assembleing it myself?

i mean ive been playing with systems forever, but its been like 3 years since i put together a system and I havnt been paying much attention to hardware. Im just worried about hassle Im going to have to go through to put something together.

I dont even know what or where to get a good bare bones system, Ive been researching all day and its giveing me a headache.

Generally Tigerdirect has good bare bones units...I've got uber geek friends who swear by them...LOL

Interesting unit:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4936535&Sku=B69-1103

You could save a couple of hundred building your own box...depends on the hardware you choose...I went with a cheap case (not carrying it around)...a mid range video card (GeForce 9500GT)...a decent cpu (Core2 Duo E6600 2.6Ghz)...2 hard drives and DVD RAM drive...then spent the big money on the mobo, and power supply...total about $700.

I've said it before a few times in different threads.  Beware of Tigerdirect Barebones kits.

The one listed above isn't too bad.  Avoid their Sub $400 barebones kits like the plague.

Why?  Here's a few reasons:
1) Outdated or Older parts, the processor in the link above is about 2 years old.  It's a tried and true one, but a bit dated IMO.
2) Unknown brands of power supplies.  Ultra's higher end stuff probably isn't bad.  There are other parts I'd recommend over them though
3) Cheap parts.  To get the prices down on the kits, they'll use cheaper quality cases and accessories
4) Rebates, they're fairly notorious for not honoring their rebates.  I can attest to this.

If you want to build the stuff yourself (it's really easy, if you can handle a screw driver, read a manual, fairly handy - its one of those things you'll be proud of that you can do), pick out the parts yourself, or ask some forum members.  Basically set your budget and lots of folks here can pick out the parts for you.  There are hundreds of tutorials on how to build computers out there - check google and youtube.

I highly recommend building computers (if you're up to it) rather than buying a pre-made or having someone make it for you.  It greatly increases your knowledge and understanding on how computers work.  And like I said before, the self-satisfaction of doing it is the icing on the cake.

maybe ill make a new post later on then, im very up to putting a system together lol, especially with a kit like that, my only concerns are that i stupidly buy something that isnt compatable, or not getting the connectors i need. thanks for the advice your right i just need to pput it together myself, since the kits seem to give me what im looking for but always have like 1 or 2 things id change.

Yeah man...between Fulmar...Humble...and Skuzzy...it's a good possibility you will get everything right the first time and have a real hummer of a system...without going overboard.

Side note: I don't generally worry about buying an expensive case since that's the one component that doesn't break down unless you're moving the system around a lot...my new gaming system is sitting in the yellow version of this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156224

If I wasn't concerned about cost and wanting to buy better internal components I would have gone with a case like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156061

Just depends on what you want to spend...  :D

I use to buy cheapy cases every couple years.  And through rebuilds and just general abuse, I'd end up replacing them after a couple years.  But I use my computer quite a bit to the distain of my wife and I'm always opening it up etc.  About 4+ years ago I spent about $130 on an NZXT Lexa case.  Still in great shape.

But if you're on a dime, cheap cases are always a place to save money.  Just don't buy one of those $30 cases with a 500W PSU with it, this is just a disaster waiting to happen.

yeah ive been looking around till my eyes bleed, heh, im not looking to go cheap unless its stupidly spending on something ill never really need, i was looking at a kit alot like the one Tildeath built, well a little, the mobo is different and it comes with 12gb of ram, like to me that seems like way to much and at almost 200 per set it seems like such a waste to me i dont know maybe im wrong. i have that extra 200 to waste but why waste 200?? thats what im afraid of.
