Aircraft Loyalty
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:52:22 AM »
I was curious about which aircraft in the game have the most loyal following. A loyal stick is more likely to master his aircraft so I referenced LW Tour 113 kills/players instead of simply deaths/players. For example: The N1K in Tour 113 claimed 15,261 kills at the hands of 1698 different pilots for an average of 8.98 kills per pilot.

This gives an idea of how many hardcore pilots fly the particular plane. There were surprisingly few hardcore sticks overall (Though it ends up making sense when you take into account that >75% of pilots are prey for the minority.)
There were high numbers of hardcore sticks in the 38 and 51 community with the 38J club easily having the largest percentage of players with >100kills.

It is interesting to see some how submodels are favored over others IE 38, F4U.

A sampling of the stats:
Model:     kills/player
P51D:     10.2
P-47D40: 3.4
P-47D25: 2.8
P-38L:     4.8
P-38J::   10.4
Spit 9:     7.8
Spit 8:     7.6
Spit 16:  11.5
190A5:     5.3
190A8:     7.1
190D9:     8.1
N1K:         9.0
F4U-1A:    9.7
F4U-1D:    4.7
F6F:          4.4
La7:          7.8
109K4:      8.4
Typh:        9.3
A6M5:       7.1
Ki84:         8.4

You'd really need to go into the individual player's stats to get an idea of what they fly.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Why am I not surprised to see SAPP members being the top killers in the P-38J in the LW and MW arenas?

Intersting stat. Trying to figure out what it exactly means. There are a lot of take-aways.
Let's start with usage which would be Percent sorties per aircraft
Example: A pilot flies 100 sorties and takes a up a P-38J 74 times, the P-38J usage factor is 74%.
But If a few people are very loyal to a plane, but most pilots don't fly it, does the plane have a high loyalty factor? Hmmm. If so usage can be plotted as a histogram of number of pilots versus their percent plane usage, maybe Loyalty could be described by the shape of the histogram. How right shifted the distribution is, would be the 'loyalty' factor.

I think the kills per pilot is a reasonable way to infer this since sorties per plane type is not available in the stats[?] (I didn't check.)

I am very loyal to the P-39, but I don't get a lot of kills, and not many others fly it. So it would have low usage, and low scores per pilot, but maybe high loyalty if one would agree that it has a small loyal following.

I'm fronting the A6M5b in MW, easily me favorite and most used ride...

If I had to guess just from the forums and such, I'd say the P38 or the F4U though.
Tours: Airflyer to 69 - 77 | Dustin57 92 - 100 | Spinnich 100 - ?

Interesting stats, but I dont think they prove the basic argument.
Perhaps not since the only way to know with any certainty is the presently unavailable sortie data Vink mentioned. I think it does show the correlation however and I wasn't surprised to see SAPP's effect either. The 38J consistently posts a superior k/d tour after tour. Those who fly something like the 38G on a consistent basis are obviously lobotomy victims and have my pity   :D

Letalis, you may like to check on Lusche's past statistics writeups.  I think the last one was called "One year of stats", or something like that.

Plane choices in the game are actually *not* being made on a rational basis of relative utility. Thank God. The MA would be much less varied if they were.
