Constant Discoes
« on: August 21, 2009, 03:06:10 AM »
Since I installed the lastest patch I have been discoed 8 times. That is the most I have been discoed ever in a single tour let alone in one night. My frame rates were steady 60 with the very occasional drop to 55, net status was flat lined, and que rate moved only very little (never to the first line).

The only other change to my system was the addition of a throttle and pedals and a new to me stick. Realizing that this may have something to do with it, I put my old gear back on to no avail (discoes still abound).

All the other updates loaded and installed and ran fine. This is the first time I have any real play issues.

I run game with all anti-virus shut down including all firewalls and there are only 20 processes running in back ground. Without the game running I am only using 264 MB of 2gigs of ram and only peak of 2% of my CPU which is a 2.8 Ghz pentium D.

here is DXDIAG:

I'd recommend a ping plotter, it may show the problem if it isn't hardware related.

Are you discoing, or crashing?  Different animals.

If Discoes are the problem, try cycling your modem and router (if attached).  If your game is crashing (i.e. "Aces High has experienced a problem and must shut down.." Windows message), it's likely hardware related.  Have you tried updating your graphics drivers?  I'm not sure what the best drivers are for the 8500 GT, may be something to look into.

If you're just disconnecting...i.e. losing network connectivity...then you have a hardware issue (although some viruses have been known to cause connectivity issues through various means)...network adapter, modem, router.

If you're game is crashing...totally different issue...your audio card drivers are ooold...and since it's a sigmatel chipset, it's possible a newer driver isn't available...custom sounds could be causing issues too...long list of maybe this and maybe that.

It is definitely discoes. Getting the "Lost UDP switching to TCP" and "Lost Host" message just before shutting down game.

I will try rebooting the modem and router tonight and hopefully that works. It has been a while since I did that.

Your route back to you takes you through Level3.  Seems your ISP is now using them as a Tier 1 transport.  Not much can be done about disco issues.  Level3 is the most oversold backbone on the Internet.  They are cheap and that is the only attraction.  Packet loss is a way of life with Level3.  They have it down to a fine art.

Well that does not sound good. I wonder if that is something that has changed in the last week or if I have just been getting lucky all this time.

Many ISP's have been jumping to Level3, and some, like Comcast, dumped them after a few months.
