Check for loose muffler screws...

Vacuum leak somewhere...

It'll frag that 2stroke in a hurry!!! You probably already have a partial seizure!!!!

Good luck

Well, if he ran it without premix, it wouldn't be running right now!!!
It would be seized already... It only takes a moment or two to stick the ring in the piston...
And its downhill fast from there!!!

I have the exact same issue with mine.  Ran great a month ago.  I cleaned the air filter, no change.  Made sure the fuel filter was clean,  no change.  Spark plug is good.

Seems to me like the issue is not enough fuel, because it requires choke to run (reducing the air, balancing the reduction of fuel?) but I can't figure out how to get around it.

Figure I could adjust the high/low speed screws like on one of my RC plane engines, but they're capped or something from the factory.  Haven't been able to get them off.

the first reply was most probably right on.

my only 2 stroke experience is in my r/c airplanes.....and whenever they've acted up, it;'s almost always been a bad fuel line, allowing an air leak(thus leaning it out) or an exhaust leak.

by adding choke, you're enrichening the mixture.

Take it back and see if they will exchange the thing. Then beat the heck out of whoever borrowed it and screwed it up.

what type , and what was the mix at ???

Some models actually last longer and run better on a leaner mix.

I went from a 2 cycle Ryobi (it bit the dust after 10 years) to a 4 cycle Craftsman.   The edger attachment and cultivator works awesome.   Best thing I did.

Now I mix nothing.   Which was my goal with the Snowblower, Mower, etc.

ok it could have a cloughed metering circuit in the carb ... the trick is to pull the spark plug and blow compressed air into it thru the head .. also 40 to 1 is kinda rich , 50 to 1 maybe alot better for it.

Not many string trimmer/brush cutters are designed to run a 50/1 mix...Most are 32/1 or 40/1.  Only few "pro" units specify 50/1 mix... If ya change the mix ratio, then you are changeing the jetting requirements as well... And like he said, the idle mix screw is sealed on 99% of them... So stay with the mix ratio stated in the manual.. The symptoms he described, say he has a vacuum leak, otherwise the engine wouldn't "runaway" when he adds extra fuel by using the choke... If it was just a plugged fuel circuit, he wouldn't get the runaway symptom... USUALLY, on a weed whacker, the vibration will loosen the muffler screws.. But the leak could be anywhere, a loose carb, intake, case screw, crankseal, cylinder base gasket (if it has one), muffler, or head gasket...  Unless it is one of the higher end "pro quality" units, Stihl, Husqvarna, McCulluch, Echo, then ya might as well see if you can RMA where ya purchased it... If not, buy another one...
The lesser quality units are disposable, not made to be repaired anyway....

Been racing 2stroke motorcycles for 40+ years... I've seized more than I can count, I know the symptoms!!!
Hard to diagnose by the BBs tho...

Hope it works out OK for ya..
