Ocean water in new patch (low detail mode)
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:19:35 AM »
Firstly I have to say that the shorelines look much more improved.   I do however, have a couple problems with the overall look of the ocean now.  It seems to be that the ocean is a lot darker and is really hard to see planes below.  When I have alt, I also see horizontal lines in parts of the ocean, like the ocean texture has different textures cut and paste on top of one another.  Here is a screen shot showing the line(s), it's a very dark capture but you should see what I'm referring to.

Also, the sun reflection on the water is... a little iffy, not very realistic looking on low end.  I think the visual problem with it is the perfect vertical white lines that the sun creates and makes the ocean white, it just doesn't look right.  Anyways, here's that screen cap of the horizontal polygon lines in the ocean.  The most noticeable one is right above Talisman's icon.  Thanks for the continued improvements to the new version though, especially for the low end users, it has vastly improved since day 1.   :salute

grizz what res are you running and what texture res?

That looks very different from the low detail on my machine.

Also I assume from the sky it is almost dark?

Also what frame rate do you get in detail mode, I see in this mode you are maxed?

Yeah, it looks like dawn/dusk.  Have you tried to adjust your gamma a little brighter?  That might do the trick.

The new low res water is a massive improvement from the old version.

Hitech, I get the exact same looking water.  Im running 1024 textures, with sliders all the way down. 1028X768 resolution.

HiTech, I run in 512 texture and 1024 x 768 game res.  I can't run the game in advanced terrain mode because I have an outdated 5200 GeForce card that runs at about 10 FR and can't even show the detail correctly.  In fact it just shows giant black blotches all over the ground as I slideshow in the tower.

In patch 6, the overall look of the ocean looked best except the shoreline was messed up.  The shoreline looked incredibly oversized.  Now, the shoreline looks like it is fixed beautifully (respectively) but now the overall ocean has taken on a very dark blue with spots of black in it. (especially when I get close, I can also produce a closeup screenshot as I sit in the ocean).

Mine looks like that if my advanced detail isnt on for water.  Kinda like a big blue quilt.

Okay, I just downloaded the new patch HiTech and I noticed you added the option for detailed water.  Without it checked I have the same look as before patch 7.  With it, here's what it looks like compared to the other capture.  It definitely seems to look less dark than it did before.  I'm not sure if that's because the first one was taken during sunset though or if you in fact toned down the darkness in the water colors.  I am running solid frame rates with the detailed water on also.  I do however still have those 'lines' in the ocean, you can see them very good in this capture.  Either way though, I have my choice now with the new option which is awesome.  The optimizations you guys have done for low end systems is pretty remarkable actually.  Any ideas what are causing these lines though?  Should I try to run the game in 1024 Textures?
