Anybody still play Eve Online?
« on: August 26, 2009, 07:50:24 PM »
Was looking for something different to pass the time when I am away from AH2...  Was thinking about giving Eve Online a try.  Any thoughts anyone?

I enjoyed it for awhile. Got bored and left. Then came back and joined a pirate/griefer corp. Now THAT was fun.

I play daily.  I would say its not for everyone, but if you're looking for a mature game (or at least one that only mature folks have the patience for), you'll love it.  Good news is that it has a two week trial for free.  I love the game, at least as far as its potential.  I'm happily established in a pretty good stretch of null sec that allows me to PvP almost every night I want.

Any advice for somebody wanting to start out?

Get yourself into a solid starting corp (and i don't mean those corps that are BEGGING for members). The difference between playing with a group of people or just by yourself is large in terms of enjoyment (imho). Mining/Missioning by yourself could be great, yeah, but doing it with the other people that have the same enjoyment as yourself can be a large boost.

Some good starter tips:
-Start with the race you feel you'll have the most enjoyment playing as:
Gallante (think USA), Ammar (think Egyptians, religous based), Minmatar (young republic), and Caldari (state composed of mega corporations).

- Gallante are short range fighters and largely use blasters and drones, small bots that attack your enemies.
- Ammar use lasers that hit for normally high damage and good accuracy.
- Caldari primarily are long range fighters, using railguns and missiles.
- Minmatar have Projectile weapons, which are currently the short end of the stick in terms of weapons, but have some of the best cruisers and frigates.

- Do missions in the beginning of your career to make yourself cash and get experience with weapons. Do some offhand mining if you'd like to see the industrial side of the game as well.

- Until you feel you have a good hand on your combat skills and could fight back if need be, don't venture into low sec.

- Always keep your clone up to date.

and thats all I can think of for now. The rest you'd learn on your own.

I currently live in 0.0 in Outer Ring (like 25 jumps of so of Gallante space) and fight in the "mythical" 0.0 battles between alliances fighting for control of space.

Good luck, hope to see you flying in the skies. If you need any help, contact my character "Rant Calmante" via chat or mail, i'll do what I can.

Eve is a decent game if it hooks you. However, it's learning curve is rather steep and it has some quarks that I don't like. I used to play it alot but right now I just check on my skill levels once a month.

Here is good description of the game:

I never tried Eve. (it's a shame, the game is Icelandic like myself!!!). Here's one you can try without subscribing:

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

I would encourage you to use the two week trial to make a couple of different characters--one that's heavily industrial, a combat focused one, etc.  See what you like most.  I wouldn't even go shopping for a corporation until you decide you want to subscribe.  Run missions or mine to make your initial money, get some ships, and then train.  Lots of stuff to learn--just stay away from lowsec until you know what you're doing.

Mount and Blade is a pretty neat game.  It has been around for years.  The folks who created it have been financing it by selling Beta copies for quite awhile.  The combat is a lot of fun, but the campaign gets a little boring.  But they may have changed, been quite awhile since I played it.  I'm sure a lot has changed.
