Well, I took the plunge today...   First character is Gallente, for better or worse.  Haven't fiddled with it much, should have more time to look into it tomorrow.

Cool dave! What's your name in game?

Once you get your feet under you and want to do some serious PvP, you can start training a lot of gun skills.  My favorite solo PvP ship is a missile boat, but solo PvP is very niche.  For fleet PvP (which can number hundreds of ships per side), guns are a better weapon.

To expand on what Stoney is saying... missiles suck in large fleet PvP because of their travel time. So many ships and even the most heavily tanked up ride will pop almost immediately. You lock, shoot, and the guy is dead before it gets there. No kill mails, no glory for you! Guns hit pretty much instantly.

I've spent more time in 0.0 than empire, and most of my friends are goons. Fleet PVP became a lot more fun when I switched from Ravens and logistics to a sniper fitted Rokh.

It's a shame these games are P2P. I enjoyed playing Mount&Blade up till Level 7, and then it told me I needed to subscribe.

I'll only be paying for AH at this point in time, especially with school nearly here.

How are things going so far Dave?

Not too badly, I don't think.  Still trying to get acclimated.  I've been doing some mining to generate some extra ISK when I'm not doing the missions.  I was wondering how I should best set up my combat Frigate for these early missions?  (Done with all 30 career tutorial missions, on the Sister Alitura (sp?) Epic mission line right now.  Thought I was doing ok, but finally lost a ship.

Any advice?

When i ran missions, i always liked to have range weapons fitted so i could stay as far away from the npc's as possible.. Personal preference i suppose, but I liked picking them off before they could touch me.. Get some rail guns on there or something.. Also, one thing you might want to train (after your learning skills of course) is salvaging.. You can make quite a bit of money by taking all the loot and salvaging the wrecks of the ships you kill. Have 2 ships.. One combat, and one to salvage/grab loot (faster ships with big cargo bays are best for this).. Makes things much easier. :)

Hyperion is addicted to it.

Negative on that. Lol. I did away with that game during the last few days of my trial. To top that off, I finished my trial by going on an EPIC FAIL run by taking out my most expensive ship and PvPing some random enemies from another faction.

As a Gallente mission runner, you want to maximize drone skills.  In general, take skills to level 3 for competency (minimum level before using the skill) and level 4 for proficiency.  For example, get your frigate skill to at least 3 before you run the more serious missions.  Get your drone support skills up to level 3.  Blasters are PvP weapons so direct any gunnery training towards rails like Nova said.  Finally, train some navigation skills so you can use afterburners efficiently.  Afterburners will allow you to "kite" enemies, which is a useful technique when at lower skill levels.  Basically, kiting is running away from the rats and killing them at range while they chase you.
"Can we be incorrect at times, absolutely, but I do believe 15 years of experience does deserve a little more credence and respect than you have given from your very first post."
