Frame rate hit with patch 8
« on: August 26, 2009, 09:38:54 PM »
Seems that the latest patch resulted in a pretty big hit to performance on my machine here.  Last night I was running patch 7 with everything turned all the way up, not sure how many FPS I was getting, I didn't have the display on the screen but it was enough that I didn't notice anything seeming off or wrong.  Logged on tonight and with the same settings I was getting 6 FPS sitting on the runway in the cockpit.

Never sure how much of the DXDIAG to post if someone needs more of it to help out I'll add on.

Re: Frame rate hit with patch 8
« Reply #1 on: August 26, 2009, 09:53:50 PM »
A little more info... the problem seemed to be with self shadow feature, I had the texture size maxed out.  I added each item one at a time from the advanced graphics detail window and then when I got to "self shadow" I started with the smallest texture size and gradually worked up.  When I got the highest setting, 8192 I got the following error in the text buffer "Create Shadow failed with -8" but didn't see a hit to the frame rates by gradually increasing the options one at a time.

So I seem to be back up to my "normal" frame rates running at 4096 with shadows and details turned on, I do think I was able to run the game at 8192 in patch 7 however without in adverse affects, getting around 40 FPS sitting on the runway now.

Although I do notice alt-tabbing takes a long time now, the window appears but is all white for several seconds before switching to the game  which usually takes around 10-12 seconds, once the game appears on screen everything is rendered at once.

I blame mir.

I'm having similar issues, here is my dxdiag.

(as a side note, should I update my sound driver?)

I finally got hit with the stutter issue as soon as I launched to a runway. Here is the film of the event... I was running at 60 frames (max'd) prior to launching to the runway.

I think the same thing was happening to me, getting 50-60 frames per second as I recall in the tower.  Soon as I spawned on the runway they would drop to 5-10. Didn't have the thought to try and record it so I'm going from memory.

The film doesn't show as much as I had hoped.

Just like Soul said, my frames dropped (I was down to 3 at one point) and my graphics reverted to non-advanced.

I had been lucking out on the performance issues with the previous patches.  With patch 8, my framerate too got hit hard.  I'm running an AthlonX2 4400, 2gb RAM, and a Geforce 8800gtx, at 1920x1200.  I had advanced water turned on, but not the self-shadow.  I normally run with framerate pegged at 59 or 60 fps, but tonight in a fairly highly-populated area my framerate dragged down into the 20s.
