P-51H
« on: August 28, 2009, 04:52:57 PM »
I want to see the P-51H. It has the same armament as the D moddle, and I'm not sure about manuverability, but it could reach 487 at 25,000ft. I think it would make a good interceptor. It could also carry 2x 1,000lb bombs, and it says "or rockets". Its not like we NEED this plane or anything, but ya, it would be cool to have it.
There was a contract for 1000 planes but 555 were produced. I know it's not a whole lot, but there were also only a few hundred tigers, and we have them.

6x .50cals 1880rds
2x 1,000lb bombs or (and?) rockets
Max speed: 480 @ 25k
Ceiling: 41,320ft
Range: 855 /1200 with DT

I just wish we had a P-51D Nem.

Pretty much the P-51H was (almost) the ultimate pony with the turbine engined version being the absolute best (and developed many years after WWII). The H model was held stateside and was never exported to anyone (if memory serves) and seldom used outside of the mainland even.

Yes, but it is just a P-51D from a different factory as I recall.

The P-51K is the same thing (nearly) as a D model but put together in Dallas. The K model differed with the D in using an Aeroproducts propeller that was made of hollow steel versus the solid aluminum Hydromatic propeller of the D. The hollow steel props were difficult to match properly due to varying densities but eventually the problems were worked out. The rejection rate for K model Mustangs was almost 20% in September 1944 due to propeller imbalance and the holdup in production for 'blade balancing' put quite a lot of pressure on the folks in Dallas. The move to the steel propellers was intended to speed up production but had the opposite effect in reality.

Every photo-recce plane (F-6K) produced after January 1944 came out of Dallas.

You're thinking of the Cavalier Mustang (wiki  :o)

The P-51H was a lightweight, Allison powered Mustang developed right before the end of WWII.  It never saw combat, anywhere.
