Flips n Tricks
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:54:07 PM »
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M4ownljZs0

First video I ever made (for ANYTHING).

I followed the standard Youtube "cheesy game compilation" format. Designed for mass consumption, has lots of action, and uses a soundtrack which is peripherally related to the subject matter.

Anyways, you historical enthusiasts may find it tacky, but hope everybody enjoys it anyways. :salute

Edit: It's "semi first-person" view. That is, I turned recorded views on, but I set all my head positions externally so you can get a better view of the action. Looks cooler, but you can still get an idea of my tactical decisions.

Well, obviously I don't have to suggest higher quality footage. :D

For a first you chose a very good concept. Action and an anchored camera. If you intend to take on larger productions in the future I do have a few suggestions:

1. Disable the icons. Yes, disabling the icons will prevent the user from seeing what you're looking at. That's where the next part comes in.
2. Zoom in. Not only does it increase the detail, it allows you to center the action where you want the user to be looking (For instance, zoom in and center the camera on an enemy Spitfire dead middle in your gunsight).
3. Use more camera angles. Don't use just one angle, and don't always use the same camera.
4. Immerse the viewer. Immersion can take place on many levels. The most obvious level is sound. Adding sound effects such as gun sounds or engine noise is one way to immerse the viewer. Another way is to find a way to freely move the camera. For instance, the camera bobs up and down when you're showing footage from the perspective of a boat. The camera shakes when you're in a plane. The camera bounces around when a plane makes a low pass overhead.

There are many more things you can do with your movies. I listed just a few ideas worth considering.

Thanks again. By the way, my two posts are different films. I get the sense from (3) and (4) that you are referring to my post with the "up close" camera angles.

To address the issues:
Higher quality footage: I need a better vid card :(.
1. Yup, for a "full production." See other thread.
2. I'll look into zoom control. Do you know if you can record the magnitude of the zoom in the film viewer? I know there's the toggle, which I use, but does it record the [ and ] keys when adjusting how far zoomed in the image is?
3. Yup, full production.
4. Yup, completely agree. But also way more effort than I can put in right now.

Thanks for the feedback and cheers. :salute

No, all my suggestions were regarding this movie you created. I didn't actually know you made the other camera shots movie until you mentioned it (don't always check usernames).

You may not have caught it, I mentioned the quality looked fine to me. The last time I used the FV it captured the zoom command from the bracket keys. Of course that could have changed in the last 2 years.

Thanks for the kind words Stokes. I like the 109s because they are kind of natural energy fighters if you use the vertical a lot.

If you keep going vertical after your passes, sooner or later you will pull in on the other guy's six. Usually when this happens, you will be at or near corner velocity, allowing you to the perfect angle for a shot  :D

Of course you also have to use smart SA - going vertical after a pass is just inviting a pick. If you play your cards right though, only handful of fighters can climb up after you. Usually they are other 109s, the Spixteen, Sp8, and occasional N1Ks and Ki-84s. Most of these you can outrun or at least pretty much equal their speed.

My mistake. In this case, the effect I was trying to achieve was less immersion and more of a glimpse into the "first person" thought process, so I didn't find 3 and 4 as relevant for this one versus the camera angles post.

Sorry, I misread you on the footage quality.   You must be riffing off of the fact that it's recorded in HD. It could be better if I had a better graphics card though. I don't even have anti-aliasing, much less detailed ground!

Finally, thanks for the info on the FV zoom command. I'll be sure to make use of it.  :aok

When I was mentioned quality I was meant the film wasn't blurry or pixelated.

Hahahaha... don't worry. I took a C.202 in the Operation Corkscrew snapshot. Downed 3 P-38s before getting shot down.

Not to be too critical, but you just picked a crap load of unsuspecting AH'ers.  :lol

Good song. camera views were very similar, try mixing them up for the next one.

Haha, if the fights were fair, the video wouldn't be very exciting. Each fight would be about 10 minutes and involve long periods of time where I am climbing away to build separation. In fact, some of these fights WERE longer, fair (sometimes less than fair, I got 1v2'd leading up to the scene where I take a front quarter snapshot on the C205), and DID involve me building my advantage over some 5-10 minutes. I just chose to only show the endings.

In the tradition of Internet gaming videos posted for self-aggrandizement, I've picked scenes where I triumph. I could post a film where I lose all my engagements, but I suspect most people would be scratching their heads...

Camera angles: again I picked "recorded views" for convenience and the fact that it's semi-realistic, depicting the situation I was looking at when making my decisions.

I may choose something different in the future, but I personally like recorded views for this style of film. It puts you in the player's position while still giving an external view so you can see what his plane is doing.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback. It's always much appreciated, even if I don't completely agree. :salute
