hellcat skin question
« on: September 03, 2009, 04:20:54 PM »
I met a WWII veteran named Lt. R. "Monty" Montgomery today.  He flew SBDs as well as F6F-5s and F4Us from '43 on. His Hellcat was a F6F-5N nightfighter and was wondering if those "N" skins are allowed on regular F6Fs. If so, would any skinners like to do this?

And how can man die better, than facing fearful odds.
For the ashes of his fathers and the temples of his Gods."

It was a night fighter variant. Radome on one wingtip containing the airborn radar unit.

I don't know if they would be accepted per se. Mostly they were the same plane, but slower (from radar drag, 10mph I think?). A rare few carried 2x20mm cannons, but photos of those are rare compared to 6x50cal armed ones. Overall, however, they're going to be blue with white numbers. Nearly identical to plenty of units that used normal "day fighter" F6F-5s. Might as well use a day skin and pretend  :aok

He said it was armed with 50s.  I just want to use his plane's skin because he's the only WWII fighter pilot I've met.

If it's not allowed, it's not allowed. Only looking for an answer.

There is an aircraft of another type that carried radar dome in the game that I know of. So I would say yes that precedent has been set.

Greebo's VMB-613 PBJ-1H had a wing mounted radome, so I'd say go for it.  Especially since a lot of the night fighter squadrons were flying routine day-time combat missions.

I couldn't remember if he had got that one through the process or not. I can't even recall which it is, heheh. I do seem to recall he mentioned it once.

Now we know!  :aok

I've already had a Marine F6F-5N accepted into the game so in principal it should be OK. However you will need some source material for the scheme. HTC usually want a photo, or at least a profile to prove the aircraft existed in RL. You might get away with a photo of a similar plane from the same squadron plus a description of his plane's specific markings from your friend.

I can do this skin for you if you can come up with the necassary information, but it won't be for at least a couple of months. I'm committed to other stuff at the moment.

Thanks Greebo. I would try it but my talents lie elsewhere (haven't found any yet  ;)). Your skins are awesome and I know he would love to see his ride in the game.

He shot down a "Jake" as well as a destroyer - with 50 cals! He has a drawing of the Jake kill framed at his home.  His plane had noseart and was called "Night Pirate".  I'll see if he has a picture of it.
