Help with buying a gaming pc

Im looking for a new pc.

I need one in the 1,500 - 2,000 dollar range.

Can anybody help me?

Well the instant response from here will be "Build it yourself", if that's followed up by "I don't know how"  That's followed up by "It's easy, and is a better idea"

But yes, custom is better.  The typical parts that will be suggested will be:  Intel (E8400/i7), Nvidia (GTX 260/280), PC P&C PSU (750watt), NZXT or Antec case and the motherboard and Ram seem to vary more.
HDD and DVD are more personal choice depending on what you need them for.

More idea will of course show up, but that's the basic lines of what you'll be looking for.  The other popular idea that goes around is Ask TilDeath, if you don't want to build it.

2 grand isn't needed to build a computer to run AH...but whatever floats your boat.

I really want to get away from vista.

I'm going to be making this OS selection pretty soon too..
If I'm going to run more than 3gig or so of ram,(will be using 8gig 1066 DDR2) then I need a 64bit OS, Right?   

OK, that means XP64 Pro, or Vista64 Ultimate..  Which is preferred?   
I've heard that Vista64Ult Sp1 has been greatly improved, True?

Other factors..
After all, XP is on the way out, can't last forever!!!
Vista64 ultimate, has the upgrade for W7 deal...

Leaning towards Vista64 Sp1 so far...

If you're going to venture past 4GB of RAM, go with DDR3. It's faster and more efficient. As you already stated, you'll need a x64 bit OS since you are going over the 4GB limit of x32. I agree with your choice of Operating System (it makes sense).

My pick would definately be Windows 7 x64. In fact all of our gaming pcs have it already - typing with it as we speak.

If you're going to buy one that's already built, I would invest in a TD system. From what I hear he's great in the Customer Service realm. On top of that, he can get a system to do just about anything on air.
