That's something I didn't know (guess it showed). Thanks for the news flash.

As for mint, I find it to be alright. The only real disappointing factor I have found so far is that when I close some of my applications which run in the background, they quit. On Ubuntu they would actually move to the background and could be accessed from a separate menu. Either I haven't found that option yet, or Mint doesn't support it. Another potential downer, on my system Mint consumes more resources than Ubuntu. Since I'm new to Linux I'm not very handy with disabling services and startup tasks. So trimming it down consists of the bluetooth applet.

Either you run it on a VERY low end machine or you're on a wild goose chase. Linux with KDE/GNOME runs just fine without tweaking as long as it has 1 gig + ram to crunch on.

Yeah, I run KDE on my old laptop (Pentium M, 512 ram, 40gb hdd) and it runs great for just a utility computer to have around the house.

No, this is a relatively new system. However, when boot time increased 14 seconds and loading time of menus and applications increased by about 10% I naturally assume more resources are being consumed.

Check your log and temp files...if they get too big your system can slow down. You might have to setup a script to run in cron so files like that don't get too big.

I've gotten a lot of information from unix.com. There is tons of stuff there.
