Having issues around smoke and firing from wirbles. Please help
« on: September 06, 2009, 09:57:09 PM »
As the title states. I am having severe frame rate drops any time i fly near or through smoke coming from buildings and when I am firing at airplanes from my wirble. During both occasions my frame rate drops from 60fps to 11fps. This causes serious stutters in the game play and i have a hard time hitting aircraft from the wirble. Currently I am running a resolution of 1920X1080 (24" wide screen monitor). Max texture of 512 with no anti aliasing. Everything disabled in the advance menu except Bump map terrain and all sliders on the detail side. Here is my Dxdiag:

Can someone recommend setting adjustment or a video card that will drop right in and wont break the bank? Any help or advise is very appreciated.  :salute

You could try to overclock that E4500 slightly. It does 3Ghz easy with the stock cooler.

Display card wise that 8500 is vintage stuff. If you're still on AGP ATI HD3850 should be cheap and able to run AH2.

The Geforce 8500 should be enough card though. Maybe the processor (CPU) could be upgraded.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

The system specs should run the game just fine....... you have something else going on and just need to tweak a bit.......

Im always amazed when I see how high some of these page files are...... yours is about 4-5 times higher than it should be.

My guess is you just have way too much stuff running in the background!

i downloaded game booster from iobit and it closes most back ground processes before i play the game.  that seems to help a bit.

I shut down nearly every process manually before i play the game and it still does it. Is there another way to shut them down?

the slot in your computer mother board where you can hook up your graphics card or sound card.  older computers have agp newer ones have pci or pci express.  I was playing fine with an 8400 gt vc but mine was a 512.  check your power supply if you still have the one that came with the computer it probably is a 300w.  I replaced mine after I got the 8400gt and my fps improved.  also  try lowering your resolution see if that helps.  u can use game booser from iobit to close all unneeded processes automatically and then reopening them after your finish playing.

The 8500GT is comparative to mainstream graphics of 2005. It's quite slow and as far as I can tell the bottleneck here.

A 3850 would be a 90 bucks investment and several generations faster.

I was having same issue when running full bore graphics settings. So I bought a NVidea GTX-275 and 600 watt power supply. Now I cant make the game stutter no matter how high I set graphics. Even huge base battles with all hangars burning I get 60 fps. And thats with graphics turned as high as I can.

Its pretty amazing.

I agree with Ripley on this. Also 1920x1200 resolution is just too much for a 8500, actually I'm surprised it's able to run the game at all at that resolution...

Albeit that video card is a bit on the lower end...if people with 7300GT AGP graphics cards can run the game decently there is no reason that 8500GT can't.

No offense to Ripley or Charge...tossing money at something is not always a viable solution for the average person...$90 is not a paltry sum to throw into a household utility item, especially for someone with a family to feed.

Pewter, you have 2 obvious things going on...as was pointed out, your paging file usage is huge...just idling (no open programs) that system shouldn't be running anymore than somewhere around 500 to 600 MB paging file usage. You need to get rid of all the "bloatware" running on Vista (sidebar, widgets, aero interface, etc...)...set windows peformance settings to run at max performance, not best graphics...if your anti-virus is a Symantec/Norton, McAffee or Trend Micro product, uninstall it and get a better "freeware" anti-virus...get a good registry cleaner and clean out your registry...then, before going into the game, turn off your anti-virus and use the game booster program.

Turn your video card resolution down, your dxdiag says you're running it 1920x1080 @60Hz...that's maxed out...1440x900 is more than adequate, and you might be able to set your refresh rate to 72Hz (you will start with 72 frames in game)...set your game resolution to 1280x920 with 512 textures...turn off all shadowing and detailed water.

Your frame rate should stabilize...if not, use a lower in game resolution (1152x860 ???).

I ran the game booster last night and it didnt help at all with the problems I am having. I am going to assume I have agp. When I put this video card in it just went into a slot similar looking to a memory card slot and then fastened down with a set screw on the case. I am still currently on the stock power supply. I guess i need to look into that also. Is the power supply a bigger is better kind of deal? or do they max out at certain wattage anyway?

I don't know if it makes a difference but the 8500gt in my pc has 512mb stamped on it. yet all the specs i see for the 8500gt show it only as 256mb. Is the 3850 the best bang for the buck performance wise? I don't mind spending a little extra to get a better one as long as it fits my pc with minimal/no modifications. I'd like to only replace these parts once and be done with it.

Is the 3850 the best bang for the buck performance wise? I don't mind spending a little extra to get a better one as long as it fits my pc with minimal/no modifications. I'd like to only replace these parts once and be done with it.

If you're really running an AGP system the 3850 will be a good upgrade. That will most likely be the last upgrade you should make to your computer before getting a totally new one with a PCI-E x16 slot. AGP cards are getting rare.

Two things are almost certain IMO anyway: Getting a new power supply will not speed up your computer. Your pagefile is also not a problem as you have 3 gigs of ram and plenty available. Vista likes to live large if you catch the drift.

The power supply may become an issue, however, if you upgrade to 3850 or any other new card. At which time you should read the requirements for power and check that your power supply can supply the demand.

You will most likely be able to gain a lot of fps by dropping your resolution down. But that comes with a heavy hit in image quality (I assume you run LCD screen with native resolution at the moment). The high resolution is the reason the 8500GT bends under pressure.

Here's a small comparison (albeit on another game)

Some points of consideration........

even with vista that page file is way out of hand, you need to trim the fat

agreed that resolution is way too high for that 8500

throwing money at the problem is fine if you want to throw money at it, or you could simply fix what you have and be perfectly happy, your hardware could run detail fine at a better resolution and not have problems

a 10 second look finds that you have a PCI-Ex16 slot on the computer, which is where you installed your 8500GT, no idea where the assumption that you have AGP comes from

bigger is better is not always true in power supplies, you need to look at the +12volt rails

although its a decent card and not criticizing it at all the 3850 is not the best bang for the buck in PCI-E, if you want to invest money and upgrade a good starting point would be somewhere around the 9800GT

also you can look at all the charts you want but dont just assume they are the holy grail....... they rarely even agree with themselves..... most charts compare apples to oranges and can be made to show whatever you want
