My top 5 choices for the next aircraft. What are yours?
« on: November 17, 2000, 11:37:00 PM »
When I consider all things, what I think would be most useful in the MA, what I think is fair for the various nationalities and what I would personally use, I came up with these:

Iluyshin Il-2 Type 3M

Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily"

Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79-II

Messerschmitt Me410A

DeHaviland Mosquito B.MkIX

The Il-2 Type 3M I would use for all ground attack missions.  With its guns, either two 23mm or two 37mm, and its loadout of 2x250kg bombs, 4x132mm rockets or 192x2.5kg PTAB anti-tank bomblets it would be the ultimate ground attack aircraft.  It is also tough enough and maneuverable enough to have a chance against fighters.  It would add a dedicated ground attack aircraft to AH (which the Typhoon is not).  And lastly, it would add to the Russian list of aircraft.

I would use the H8K2 "Emily" as both an Axis bomber and torpedo plane.  It brings a tough, well defended, 4 engined Axis aircraft into the game.  The Emily's armament of 5 20mm cannon as well as multiple smaller guns plus the fact that it has good self sealing tanks and armor for the engines and all crew members means that it would probably replace the B-17G as the nastiest bomber to attack.  It would, of course, also add a multi engined Japanese aircraft that, unlike the G4M "Betty", is not cannon-fodder.

I have to admit that I am extremely unlikely to fly the S.M.79-II.  However it is only fair to add a multi-engined Italian aircraft to AH.  I selected the 79-II because it has both bomb and torpedo capability while the 79-III only has torpedo capability.

The Me410A would be an extremely versatile aircraft that could serve in many, many ways.  Just think of all the loadouts it had.  I shudder to think of what the loadout selection screen would look like.  I would fly this aircraft occasionally.  It would add a good heavy Luftwaffe fighter to AH.

The Mosquito B.MkIX would act as a fast manuverable light bomber.  Although it is unarmed, it could fly at 425mph and carry a single 4,000lb "cookie".  It would also be easy to do other versions once this aircraft was added.  With the addition of this aircraft the RAF's three main successes would be present; Spitfire, Mosquito and Lancaster.  I would definitely fly this aircraft.

I opted against the Aichi B7A2 Ryusei "Grace" and the Tupolev Tu-2 because I feel that they are too good.  With the addition of the B7A2, why ever take a TBF Avenger in the MA?  With the addition of the Tu-2, why ever take a B-26B?

Try to pick new airframes, not variants of existing aircraft.

1. Attack: Il-2 Type 3M - duh.

2. Attack bomber: Tu-2S - 300mph on deck, 340mph at about 18k. Maximum bombload of 3x1000kg bombs. 2xShVAK forward firing cannon, 3x12.7mm UBT defensive guns. Edit - some incorrect info.

3. Fast bomber: P1Y1 - OK, so not that fast at 340mph, but for a IJN bomber it is. Can carry a torpedo or 1000kg bombload. Low wingloading and a flexible 20mm up front and at the back would make it a danger to any intercepting fighters, plus it looks damn cool!

4. Heavy fighter: Beaufighter Mk VIC - 300mph on the deck, 4x20mm, 6x.303in or 8x60lb rockets, plus 2x250lb bombs or a torpedo. Die, shipping, die!

5. Italian bomber: S.M.79-II - With 3 Piaggio P.XI RC.40 radials of 1000HP it should have quite respectable performance, plus it can carry 2 torpedoes and has better defensive firepower than the Ju 88A-4.

CAS A/C: Il-2 (pleeeaaaazzzee!)

High speed, low level bomber:Mosquito B.MkIX

Heavy Fighter: Bristol Beaufighter - it was a fantastic, versatile plane. It's anti-shipping capability (I think it could carry 2xtorps.) is well documented. Didn't the Japanese call it 'Whispering Death'? It would be great in Afrika Korps, instead of us having to fly typhoon  .

Fighter: La-7 - this would be a nice addition.

Yep, the Japanese called the Beaufighter the whispering death because of it's ultra quiet engines!!    The Australian version (Mk21) of the Mk X had 4x.50s replacing the 6x.303s and also had higher powered engines.

Bring it on!  I wanna torpedo some ships!

Great list, except I'd vote for a Beaufighter Mk X instead of the Mossie (I know, both would be great) since the the Beau is the more unique plane and not done before (IIRC)

Pick a Sturmovik (Il-2/Il-10).
Pick a Soviet bomber (Pe-2/Tu-2).
Pick a Japanese bomber.
Pick a Japanese Army aircraft.
Pick an RAF light/medium bomber.

One from each of those categories would make scenarios much easier to do, thank you!

Missed this first time around...

"I opted against the Aichi B7A2 Ryusei "Grace" and the Tupolev Tu-2 because I feel that they are too good. With the addition of the B7A2, why ever take a TBF Avenger in the MA? With the addition of the Tu-2, why ever take a B-26B?"

WHY do the TBF and B-26B have to be the best a/c in their class? Isn't this the same Karnak who says buffs are easy to kill, yet now we can't have any better ones? HUH?!

What really baffles me is that the Tu-2 is "too good", but then you pick a bomber(of which only 4 were made  ) which would be able to cruise at 35,000ft, virtually immune to interception, and drop it's 4,000lb bombload with deadly AH accuracy where ever it pleased! Hmmm....

For funked:

Il-2 Type 3M
Tu-2S
P1Y1
Ki-84-Ib
Wellington III(Keeping to the 1942 theme  )

being a "bomber dweeb" and pending the "bomb drift" fix

I would have to say the B-29 superfortress, I know many would say that it would make the b-17 and Lanc useless but based on that standard we would only have 6 or 7 fighters total! Bomber pilots have a hard enough time as it is almost never being able to get escort and having to go in alone most of the time, shouldent we be AT LEAST be able to have the best bombers that were available?

besides, it is practically the plane that won the pacific war and to ignore that is to undermind the whole existance of this game.

Well, my first choice for the next plane to be added is going to be in the nest version (F6F... heheh only cats I like are the ones made by Grumman  ).  Therefore, I will only mention 2:

2:  Some kind of naval divebomber to go with the fleet.  I would like to see the SBD-5 or the Judy.

3:  A Japanese Air Force fighter, either the Ki-84 or Ki-100 (preferably the late model with the bubble canopy, but either would be great)
