computer shuts down
« on: September 07, 2009, 05:46:34 PM »
My computer shuts down after 20-90 mins of gameplay and I have to unplug for about 10 seconds and restart, then I can play for awhile again and then it shuts down again. This only happens when playing AH so I thought it might be getting hot so I cleaned it all out and still get same thing. Temps are cpu 41c  mb 47c and gpu 70c these all taken after about 30 mins of AH play. Thanks

Sounds like a bad/dying Power Supply.  Go into your system BIOS and check the voltage readings.

Can you get your temps during game play... you could run Real Temp or something similar in the back ground which will record the highest temp (if you shell out of the game your to late to see the gaming temp, takes about 1/10 of a second to drop down).  If these are within operating temps then I agree that the PSU should be checked and stress tested for the possibility of replacement.

I had a cpu heatsink come loose just enough to mess up the thermal interface goop.  It looked like it was on and secure, but it wasn't cooling very well.  Temps when idle were fine but add a little stress and they spiked fast.  You are running a pentium 4 cpu which were notorious for running hot, so you might consider removing the heatsink, cleaning the cpu and heatsink really well (some places sell kits with 2-step goop remover and surface cleaner), applying a good thermal past like artic silver 5 (or whatever you choose), and putting it back together again.

Your vid card temp sounds a bit high for not being used...  Try taking the temps with a windowed graphics card utility like rthdrbl running.

Also, if your mobo is old then you might be seeing problems with the mobo itself heating up.  If you don't have at least one case fan in addition to your power supply exhaust fan, you might consider adding an intake fan.  While you're in there, try to de-clutter the cabling so it doesn't interfere with good airflow.

Bios voltages only show what you're getting at idle... under heavy load, the power draw increases and the psu might not be able to cope.  As tildeath recommends, get a utility that will monitor and record temps (and voltages if possible) while you're gaming so you can see what the max values are before it crashes.  Get something that writes the data to a logfile so it will still be there after the computer crashes.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Ok, I did try rthdrbl and that locked up computer so that isn't an option :(.   I don't have time to fly tonight but I do have asusprobe to monitor and log temps, fan speed, and voltages on mb and cpu. Also have gpuz to monitor card temps to log file, I will fly when I get a chance and post crash temperatures and see what you guys think. Thanks

It's really time for a new duo core machine Sno. That Pentium 4 is not a good chip from what I understand. You will be infinitely satisfied with the new processors. They run faster, multi-threaded, and they run cooler.

ASUS Probe is NOT a good way to see the info.  The ASUS software leaves a lot to be desired for acuracy and dependability.  If your thinking it is a temp problem as I stated above use "RealTemp" or OCCT.

thats typical of a overheating problem. also check the caps on the board.  those 478's ran hot seen a artical where they would run 80c.

Depends on which core it is.  His just says 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4.  Could be a Northwood or a Prescott.  If the latter, yeah, it can be a torch.

If rthdrbl locked up your computer I think we have a winner... GPU fault.  Vid card memory failures usually just end up with corrupted screens, and I've seen terribly flaky cpus run for days without causing a computer freeze or reboot, but a bad video card has in my experience almost always resulted in an immediate freeze or spontaneous reboot.

A couple of things to try - new vid card driver (roll back to a previous one if you have the latest).  Try to get a vid card utility that cranks up the video card fan to a higher speed.  Make sure the video card heatsink hasn't detached from the GPU chip.  If your video card relies on a dedicated power cable from the PSU, make sure no other devices are also connected on that line (no hard drives, no fans, NOTHING).  Disconnect and reconnect the power cable to the video card.

If it still locks up on rthdrbl, then you could try removing and replacing the vid card heatsink after cleaning it and then adding new thermal paste.  If that doesn't work, then it's either a dead video card or something else is broken :)
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

wardog, thanks I already use Glary utilities, ccleaner and gamebooster, and yes I have had these issues without using gamebooster and without av running, so I think that as eagl said and if I could get the time to play and record temps and such that it probaly is the video card.
