Flying the Yak
« on: January 24, 2001, 10:49:00 AM »
The Yak has been my main ride this tour. I love the roll rate and the speed of the little critter. The 4 things I have learned so far is, keep it fast, use B&Z tactics, get close and personal when going to the guns, and the main thing is to have patience.

However, I need a few tips from other Yak drivers. You comments are welcomed.

It's incredible.  I flew it for the first time in 3 months and got 14 kills, rearming twice.  I fly it like I fly my Spit.  I use the vertical for offense (looping fights, boom and zoom, rope a dope) and turn for defense.  But unlike the AH Spits, I can actually run away from something if I make a mistake.

I too have been giving the Yak a try.  Its a very nice little kite.  Yes, it feels SMALL to Spit pilots.

RAM,
Us Spitfire MkXIV and Fw190D-9 pilots are going to have to learn how to run with marginal speed advantages.  They'll both be perks I'm guessing and every fast non-perk is going to be after us for the bonus poins of knocking us down.

I know you're hoping the Fw190D-9 won't be a perk and I agree with you, but I think we'll be disappointed on this count.    Hopefully I'm wrong.

Oh I'm not wrong. ;MW50 Fw190D9 is a plane only 7mph faster than P51 at the best of the altitudes, but way worse turner. if it is perked then the P51D should be perked too.

Ozark, get out of that Yak and into a real plane. That's my best advise. LOL!   I flew the Yak quite a bit when I first got on AH. The only things I didn't like about it were the limited fuel and ammo. Otherwise a fantastic little plane.

Yaks scare the hell outta me. Only plane I run against that out ponies the pony.. he dives better; accels better; turns WAY better and frankly if he see's me soon enuff and gets me defensive I'm just plain dead.

Only place I can work a Yak over comfortably is above 20k. Thank god they don't have a 4x20mm version of this thing.

It's kind of funny Jimdandy, those are some of the reasons I started flying. It taught me patience and discipline. Gone are the days that I would take a wild prettythang shot and hope for a hit. It made me stop and think before I engage...sometimes I find myself watching and waiting for that one close range shot.

Like Funked said, I can actually run away from something if I make a mistake. I have landed more missions this tour than any other.

Plus, it's a hoot to flying into a group of 10-20 bad guys at 400+ mph, only to wave and and outrun them.

Ozark, I think I am one of about 10 Yak die hards in Aces High   I'm probably far from the best, but here's my advice:

1.) Stay fast, and use classic 109 style E fighting techniques.

2.) Nothing out loops a Yak, except maybe a G10 above 20k. Always use the vertical.

3.) Best defensive manuever in a Yak is the flat scissors, and rolling scissors can be thrown in for good effect.

4.) Contrary to popular belief the Yak is not a good turner, its middling at best. Well Almost   The Yak turns best to the right, where most aircraft are best turning to the left. So ALWAYS turn to the right (where once your good at it, you can almost out turn a average spit pilot). Also adapt your ACM thinking so that you begin all merge tactics to the right, to maximize your turn rate, but realize that this throws it into a same circle fight instead of what your use too.

5.) Be patient and get in close before you fire.

Anything else specific?

Thanks Verm,

Does the Yak have a turbo-charger or super-charger system and if so, what altitude will it kick in?

I'm sure I'll think of more questions later.

I'll ditto this.  I noticed Offline that I couldn't hammerhead a Yak to the left easily, but go right and she's a beauty.  If I only remembered that more often in turning fights.

I'm becoming a Yak-head... I find myself humming tunes about the Motherland while closing fast on bombers.  I absolutely LOVE nailing buffs with this plane!!

She's also teaching me a lot about keeping enemies visible when entering vertical moves... having the see-thru seatback is NICE on this plane.

*S* and regards,

Jay.

I flew the Yak a lot last tour and really liked it.  The odd thing is that when I got a set of rudder pedals and stopped using my twist stick my Yak flying went down the tubes.  Not really sure what the correlation is but it seemed like the controls went mushy on me.

Got my butt kicked so many times that I quit flying it for this tour, the funny thing is my FW flying got much better with the pedals.
