New System
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:31:48 PM »
Ok, I am tired of trying to fly on my laptop.  Even when I get everything tuned up for a 50 or 60 FPS rate when flying around, just about the instant I try to make a shot the frame rate drops below 10 (at 3 FPS for one shot last night - I missed).

I can get a good deal on the following system:

Intel Core 2 E8400 (6MB, 3.0 Ghz, 1333FSB)

2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 200MHz

nVidea GeForce GTS 240, 1024MB

What say you all, will I be happy with the performance from this machine?

Pat

IMHO you should get 4GB RAM depending on what OS you run. You should run fine with those specs...not too sure about the GPU, not too up on those.

Should run AH just fine, but the most important question would be Who Makes It?

I bought a gateway for a great price 3 years ago, seemed like a bargain back then.  I just basically had to buy all new hardware to upgrade it. (case, ps, motherboard, vc, ram).  So if you buy from dell, compaq, etc.  you wont be able to upgrade it in a couple of years.  You'll just have to buy everything all over.

Depends on which model. Buy one of the cheapo low end home user models with the celeron processor and forget it. The middle and upper lines aren't such a problem. I do upgrades on those brands all the time...still not the best for gaming though.

slow memory?  thats DDR2-800..... unless hes planning on OC then thats still overkill for that CPU

definitely agree on the VC though....

Its not the slowest but with 1066 and 1333 available its middle of the road. Me personally prefer the fastest ram available.  Easier to step faster ram down then slower ram up.

if yah have the money i would goto a 260, i noticed prices have gone up on those now. they were about 159 after rebate, now around 189. depending on model. Thats with XFX and EVGA, those to companies I prefer because of their lifetime warranty. XFX has a double lifetime warranty , guess that would be a good point if you have intentions of upgrading in a year or so, the next owner has lifetime warranty as long as its registered properly, be a good selling point I suppose.

It will run Aces High just fine. 4 GB of RAM will do you good though. Especially if you plan on caching everything. The graphics card will be sufficient to run your graphics at max. You may only have troubles with the self shadow.
