More than 1 player can be in the plane, but only the person who selected it can fly it, the others can fire the separate gun stations.

Up to one person can join your flight by typing ".join handle".

If you're flying a fighter with no gunner positions, they'll just sit in the cockpit as an observer.

If you're flying a figher or bomber with a gunner position, they will act as your gunner, and you'll only have access to the cockpit & bomb sight.

The commands for joining another players aircraft are not buttons.

They are "dot" commands.  A text message you type into the chat buffer, but it is sent to the computer to do a function.

.join the guy's name

To get out again, you have both need to be on the ground at the control tower interface.

.unjoin The guy's name

You cannot unjoin in mid air, but you can join him at any time.

in head to head mode there is a small bug (or was) that didn't show the request to the pilot.  To join in H2H give the .join <handle> command then tell the person the request is sent.  He/she can then .accept and voila you are in.
One other note.  To get back out again you have to be in the tower at the time you .unjoin
