The Red Bull air race vs Reno air race: which one is harder?
« on: September 19, 2009, 05:19:17 PM »
So...

A short but hard solo flying with insane of G's vs relatively long but insane speed mayhem with other hole-heads nearby.

Which one has The Hardest pilots?

Having seen what, 5 or 6 crashes and I believe 4 pilots die in 4 or 5 days at Reno one year, methinks that one seems a bit tougher.

Red Bull Air Racing has the harder pilots (physically speaking) no question....

The highest average G-force in a Reno event is around 3.5, barely above a good roller coaster. Red Bull pilots will pull 10+ G's over a few seconds multiple times through a run.

Mentally Reno racers probably are better prepared, the airframes are older and often in close proximity to each other.

Ask a Redbull pilot what makes him more uncomfortable, racing the Redbull courses in an Edge, or running a heavily modified Hawker Sea Fury at 120" of manifold pressure, 50 feet off the ground, at almost 500 mph, in close proximity to other planes doing the same.

Reno=F1, NASCAR, Indycar, all rolled into one and taken to the nth degree.

Red Bull= pro solo

Reno actually has many different classes that race. The unlimited class is just the top of the food chain. They do have a class that looks very much like the Red Bull racers.

Of course in Reno there are several racing at one time, as opposed to the single plane flying against the clock.

Yep, the bi-panes also start racing right of the runway.  Pretty cool I think.

Well put.

The Reno racing surely requires a certain nerve & guts to fly.

BTW
Nice pictures there. The contra prop Precious Metal is my favorite Reno racer.

WTG Cyrano.
Few question about the rules:
- Is there a certain roll +/-degree tolerance for the Level and Knife air-gate passing? Or is it just up to the judge?
- What is consired as a too low flying? The Budapest Chain Bridge passage is tight and the planes are pretty low already there.

Hajrá Peter! :aok

Thank you for your comments.

Here is the question to ask yourself.
If I could only go to one of these events in my lifetime, which event would I go to?

Reno :aok
