The only exciting thing about this... Manufacturers seem to be making a little room for personal upgrades.

I was surprised to see that one of my classmates built a gaming laptop for his senior project. I didn't realize all the components were around for that yet.

(Still pretty lame to build a computer for a senior project, I think, but...)

Laptop and gaming shouldn't be used in the same sentance.

Yeah, laptops are starting to be competitive for a price...I still prefer a desktop, myself. They'll always be faster since they don't need to bother with "mobile technology."

I have no idea. Heck, it may have been a lie. He always was good at that.

While not empty shell, Asus among some others has provided 'barebone' laptops that contain a casing, motherboard and such but which you have to compile yourself using off the shelf components. CPU, memory etc. Some laptop computers even support add-on graphics cards afaik - even though I've never seen one for sale anywhere. And since they're so rare they must cost. A lot.

FWIW, IMO, YMMV, and of course there are exceptions etc. - but another "truism" is that often even a laptop that's equivalent in every way to an "identical" desktop is inferior for gaming, because the BIOS is generally optimized for power conservation. This often means odd slow downs and other quirks that don't happen in the "exactly matching" desktop system.

Of course, I'd like to believe that a gaming oriented laptop is different, but...

These "shells" are actually called "White Books".  There are many manufactures that offer the Whitebook base.  ASUS makes an excellent dedicated to gaming laptop but this is an expensive rig.  If you look at the one posted by skribetm this looks like one to me.  You can see its advantage with the 3dMark score.  His score rivals most desktop systems.  He does have it overclocked pretty well.  My only concern would be cooling at those clock speed.  But very impressive Skibetm  :salute
