MAYDAY ...need help reading outlook files
« on: September 24, 2009, 08:46:51 AM »
The moment finally came when my main rig suffered a fatal motherboard crash and is henceforth out of operations.
I managed to get the HD working on a new rig (hewhem, now I fly AH with a reasonably good frame rate under the temporary name of "meanhorn".
However, I have a serious problem accessing my old outlook mailbox. Possibly Eudora as well (am not that far yet). In short, I have got far enough to find my files which have the names of outlook.pst and archive.pst. But reading them is another matter.
I imagine that there would be a viewer available for this, but have found none yet. I am attempting to import this into outlook on another rig, but it does not seem to work.
So, any of you have a clue? What would you do?
All the best.
Angus the Meanhorn

I'm sorry, but I haven't used Outlook since I was little, so I'm going from basic knowledge here.

Were the files in an Application Data folder? If so, it seems as though you ought be be able to move the whole "Outlook" folder into the same place on a new machine, open Outlook, and have it simply read the files and start up normally with everything intact.

If you can transfer them via flash drive, you should be able to paste the pst file into the local settings\application data\Microsoft\Outlook folder.  Rename it to Outlook1.pst then go into Outlook and direct it to look in that folder using procedure listed below.

OK,
the first thing you have to do is attach them to your outlook client. That will alow you to look at them and use them again. They can be placed anywhere on you hard crive even the desktop (not advised).

Once you have placed them where you want them.
1. open outlook
2. click file
3. click Open
4. Click on Outlook Data file.

A window will open and you celect the PST ofr aricive file (where ever you put them) then click ok.
You can nor see them in the All Mail Folders window pain on the left.

Let me know if this works for you, there are allways other posabilities

Make sure the 2 versions of outlook are reasonably close.  (easier to go from older to newer version than the other way)  Also, if you set a password on the pst file when you created it you will need to enter that into the new copy of outlook.  If the file is corrupted use the utility that comes with outlook called 'scanpst' to repair a damaged pst file.

Outlook will not even let me that far. Well, - I can browse and click on a PST file, but nothing will happen.
Am now looking into pasting the files into the subdirectories of outlook, just have to get around all the hidden mumbo-jumbo file stuff.
Odd isn't it. So much protection about your mail stuff and then everybody pours just about everything out through facebook and blogs. Maybe I should look into that a tad more. Open emails  :devil

Setup your email account in Outlook. Make sure you can send/receive and get new mail.

In Outlook go to Import and Export -> Import from another program or file -> Personal File Folder (.pst) -> browse and find the pst file you want to open -> do not import duplicates...then finish the process. It should bring all of your old outlook email back.

As for Eudora...good luck.

Here's the catch. I have old outlook on my old HD. Not on my new rig. And the old HD will not start outlook unless it's the bootup drive (C),, and since the setup does not match with the hardware of the new rig it will not easily work.
I will have to get myself a new copy of Outlook (or the whole bloody office pack) for me being able to import the mail files. That's some nice couple of hundred bucks up here. Alternitively I can buy a retrival program for some bucks as well. Nice isn't it. Or, find a friend who has outlook, get him to import the data, and spend a day or so cutting and pasting.
That's how far I've got. Oh, I had the office pack, but the rig outlived the cd's.
Lesson learned.....move on to much more open source, and get as far away from MS stuff as possible. I have bought windows quite a few times by now, and the only thing brought is having to constantly buying their packages for the data to "live".

Harrrfff :devil
