I agree Citabria, it's fun.

I've had a few scary moments with an unbalanced bombload too!

Ouch.  Amen to that.  I really had an eye opener when trying to drop some 1000 pounders on tanks in the TA last night.  I dove, let one go down someone's turret, then tried to pull away into a climbing turn...

Only to have the whole plane just give out from under me and practically snap my neck from spinning so hard.  Pesky bugger.

Actually funked under WEP the LA-5FN does around 380. 395 in a shallow dive. And yes- this matches the chart- which shows the speed to be around 380MPH at 6,800 ft.

While 415 is reachable in a tiffie it requires far too long to get there I am afraid. The acceleration of the La-5FN should catch it long before it has top speed.
In my 2 tries I took over 60 seconds to get the speed above 400 MPH and the biggest amount of that was in the vital range between 380-400 where it would be vulnerable.

And when the La-7 comes out the tiffie will REALLY be outclassed- it should do about 425MPH at 6,500 ft.

Tiffie is one of my favorite dive bombers in AH with 2x1000lb
It has real good diver characterics for dive bombing that I like, it's very accurate.
(P-38 dig in like a rock when i tried to dive bomb.. err)

Sorrow, You have a point about the acceleration of course.

If the La-5FN can catch the Typhoon before he gets to 350 mph or so, the Lavochkin has a chance.

But beyond that the Typhoon  will leave him standing.

I did a test to demonstrate this.

Acceleration from 150 mph at 5k feet, Max. Internal Fuel and ammo, WEP Power.  All times +/- 0.5 sec.

Speed, Time (Typhoon/La-5FN)
200mph 11sec/ 9sec
250mph 25sec/22sec
300mph 42sec/42sec
350mph 72sec/88sec

At low speeds the superior power:weight ratio of the Lavochkin helps it accelerate faster.

But remember that the power to overcome drag increases with the cube of velocity.  So at high speeds, most of the engine power is working against drag - weight is not a big factor.

So the better power:drag ratio of the Typhoon means it will outpace the La-5FN in the long run.

It's kind of like comparing an F-1 car and and Indy car.

And, correct me on timelines, but it's more appropriate to compare the La-7 to the Tempest.
