CH fighterstick issues

been having some problems with my fighterstick. it will lose calibration at random times. currently using pci-usb card, have used a powered hub, and onboard usb with same results.

Make sure the computer isn't turning off the USB ports to save power.

If that isn't it, it could be the pot. I haven't seen the new CH pots go bad like that, generally they tend to float instead. The older gameport Fightersticks were really bad for that type of loss of calibration.

I got an addin card from Best Buy that was total junk for joysticks and my CH was acting like yours is so I moved the joysticks to the motherboard ports and used the card for my printers and IR Blaster etc and have not had a problem since. I have replaced the card now but the joysticks are still on the MB.

make sure the rotary dials on the base of the stick for elevator and aileron  are BOTH centered.

Sometimes people get a little too frisky with the duster and move them by accident.

If they weren't centered, it would cause a constant issue, rather than a random event.

That might be a point but I think I have seen sticks behave that way with the trims off center too. Calibrating in the game gets them working at first but then they wont hold calibration.

wheels are centered. stick at time of pic is centered and throttle is full forward. it has always done this. i replaced the pots thinking that was the problem. no luck. have tried different types of usb connections( hub, pci card, mobo....). same thing.

Not what OS are you using? I just checked and I am using CHCM v 4.30 but I would think your newer version would be even better.

current OS is vista 64bit. 4.50 version seems to be better IMO.

Not CH sticks.  The only time the calibration would get out of whack is if the trim dials were centered after you've calibrated the stick.  It wouldn't randomly cause the calibration to go bad.

I agree with Del, it sounds like a hardware issue with the stick itself but before you send it off to CH, test it on another computer if you can.  This will help eliminate some potentional causes or help verify the problem.  

Granted, it's been many years since I've done CH tech support but the problem pretty much mirrors the symptons of using a USB port that is not outputting the necessary voltage (5 volts), which would cause the exact issue you're facing.  Dead pots could also throw your stick out of calibration at random times but usually bad pots are easy to spot during calibration when you move your stick around.

Keep in mind with powered USB hubs, not all of them output the necessary voltage despite being powered.  Usually lower end USB hubs are guilty of this, that's why I usually only recommend Belkian USB hubs since I have yet to purchase one that did not output the industry standard voltage.

Another thing you can try to eliminate the USB hub of being the culprit is to disconnect all other USB devices from your system and only connect the stick.  Try it with the powered hub and the USB ports on the mainboard, if the problem still exists and you've verified the problem on another machine than you can be pretty certain it's the stick itself.  Though usually on the rare side, sometimes you just get a bad stick out of the box.
