At 15 I think I was too young to know better....after the first full 1/4 pass I came back and said, "I want to go faster." Typical pass would launch at 4400 rpm, shift before the wheels hit terra firma at 7200, get the car centered in the groove, shift again, and start looking for the other guy. First pass in the dragster was interesting, shifted automatically as it drove thru the 330' and started pulling hard. After the 1/8 mile I started to evaluate what was going on, it was kinda surreal. My only thoughts were, "The wind is loud." and "That engine sure is quiet." as I went through the finish line at 155 mph.

Had a scary-funny moment at a local 1/8 mile track, with a 3/16 mile shutdown. An 1/8th to go and 3/16th of a mile to stop, with a 30 foot berm at the end of the track. Went thru the finish line and the dragster (hard-tail) started bouncing, bad. Go for the chute as the car starts wheel hopping at 125mph, as in rear tires off the ground. I never felt the chute deploy and got the car stopped, that berm looked a few feet taller as I was willing the car to stop. The really funny part, jump out to wrap the chute up and it was still in the pack! I take my helmet off and the damn thing falls to the ground! I had a word with the guy who packed the chute, it wasn't friendly and didnt have to go far to cuss the guy out.

ya,......it's actually amazing how low we can launch these things.

we had a 4500 rpm chip in the 2 step, which really limited us to about 4100 rpm. we had noticed that these chips seem to start their thing around 400 to 500 rpm below their labeled rating.
 so, my typical run, would be hit the bleach box, "burp" the throttle, and pull out of the water. set the linelocks, 1st gear, run her up to about 5500 rpm, shift to 2nd, and by 4000 rpm, i could feel the tires grabbing, so i'd release the lock, let her roll forward, and when i did this right, i was only a couple feet from staging.
 back to 1st gear, and do a couple throttle hops, to be sure the tires are hot enough, then pre-stage and wait to see the other guys pre-stage light come on. as soon as it did, he dissappeared, and i staged(i always liked to stage first), and VERY shallow, then on the transbrake.
 we ran a delay box, which was already set before i got into the bleach box. if i was giving the headstart, i set it up for a double hit, if i was taking it, i set it for single(obviously). so, both cars staged, transbrake set, and at the flicker of anythign yellow, i'm off, and throttle firewalled. transbrake lets go, she launches like you saw in the picture(deadly consistantly too). the front never just "dropped", but rather "settled" and i could feel a little wiggle in the wheel. that's about when the shift light came on, and i hit 2nd, look around a little, see that everything "looks right" for how she sounds and feels. pull 3rd, another look around, and then look for the guy i'm running down(if i took headstart, i only checked landmarks). if i;m running you down, i pull up on ya, and lift, then work the throttle to maintain about 1/2 a fender on ya.

 all of my shifts were at 6400 rpm. never had a need to wind her any higher. she'd be flickering the shift light going through the traps.

 it's a fun car, and is straight as an arrow. rarely ever had to really steer her, although i did kinda "drive around" a trail i could see from the schmuck that blew his rear, and coasted the entire length of the track.

yup thats outrageous, six people die and they scapegoat the driver. no one from the charity who hosted the event or the council that rubberstamped the safety permits gets indicted.


It ruined Troy's life, but much of it was his fault, although he meant well. It also completely destroyed Larry's life, and his charity, which did a great deal for children, for many years, Larry lost everything he loved already, and he is still being sued.

how long ago did that happen?


not meaning to sound crass about it, but my car's not nearly as capable as that one looked...and i'd never do that.........

not meaning to sound crass about it, but my car's not nearly as capable as that one looked...and i'd never do that.........

The incident in Selmer Tennessee with Troy Critchley's Pro Mod car (Pro Mod should be called Pro Stupid, you need to be brain dead to own one or drive one) where he killed 6 people after losing control during a burnout in a parade happened 3-4 years ago, I guess.
