Hey! Guitar guys--come on in!!
« on: October 03, 2009, 10:38:00 PM »
Came across this recently.

Seen him live only twice. Way back!

Its a real shame this guy flew under the radar while every one was "shakin their booty"!!

Basic "Rock and Roll" guitar at its finest!! :rock

I love the comment at the top, right under the video.

Soooo--who were YOU listening to during the Disco assault??

P.S.--At the 2 minute mark--sit down--for your own safety! :O

Too much diddla diddla for me.  I'd rather here one note that I can feel than 20 that are supposed to impress.

Here's the master of the single note killer.

But the definitive Frank Marino song has got to be Strange Dreams:

Diddla diddla!!

Freakin hysterical!!

Different strokes, I guess.

I can a appreciate ALOT of different types of guitar playing!!

I really can't say that I've ever called ANY talented guitar players music --"Diddla diddla"

Though I HAVE heard a few "Blues Nazis" use that phrase. ( A regional euphemism)--(probably)

Sooo--I guess your answer would be that you listened to alot of BB King during the Disco era?

Awesome---Great guitar player!  Nice style!

Though I might add--not enough "Diddla diddla" for me.

The Frank Marino clip was excellent.

The B.B. King clip blew me away.

Great finds both.

I ended up delving into YouTube after watching the B.B. King vid and found the following.

Blues Legends 1873-1924

which led me to the following...

Muddy Waters Rollin' Stone

I heard a story John Mayer was telling about a time he got to play on stage with BB.  BB called him out for a solo, and John said he played every note he could think of, he said it was the best solo he had ever played.  The crowd went wild.  Then BB started his solo, he plucked a single note and hung it out for the entire time.  John said he learned a lot that day  :rock

I was born in '75 so thankfully I missed the Disco Era.  Grew up listening to 50's rock and surf music.

I've worked for the last 12 years as a guitar player in Nashville.  I've had people that I work with call me a talented guitar player, so now you can say you've heard a talented guitar player talk about diddla diddla.

I can appreciate the talent/skill/practice that it takes to be able to do that kind of stuff, I just don't like listening to it.  To my ear it very quickly becomes just noise with all of the distortion and speed involved.  Not a knock, just what my ear likes to here.  For me guitar playing is about hitting someone in the chest with the emotion of the notes.  So to that end I'd rather listen to BB King, Elmore James, SRV and the like.  I guess that could make me one of your "blues nazis."  But then when you look at how I also enjoy Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins and Brad Paisley it gets harder to pigeonhole me.

There's some music that is more fun to play than to listen to, for sure.

I know what your talking about.
Best described in Eddie & the Cruisers II where Eddie is trying to tell the kid guitar player whats wrong with his playing

Coudnt agree more
Great playing is more then just fast & fancy licks.
Case in point. In the Video linked he takes the classic "Johnny B. Goode" and over plays it until the song is almost entirely unrecognizable.

There is a reason why you dont hear this version on the radio
