While it's true that only in certain situations will the 5870 best the GTX295, we are comparing a single GPU card to a dual GPU card. The much lower noise and power consumption of the 5870 is not something to overlook either. Newegg is listing the XFX 5870 at 379.00 and the XFX GTX295 at 479.00. As mentioned, factor in Eyefinity and it becomes a much less difficult call from my particular cheap seat vantage point.
It's
anticipated/rumoured that the 5870x2 Dual GPU card from AMD will be launched in late October to coincide with Windows 7 and it's expected that this card will completely trounce the GTX 295, also have Eyefinity and be competitively priced.
Personally, I'm looking hard at the 5850 for the best performance/price.
