GTX295 or ATI Radeon HD 5870

I’m thinking about cancelling my GTX295 order after looking at ATI’s new flagship model, the HD5870! I've got an Asus rampage II which will works with either.

Good idea? Need opinions asap.

If your goal is to have the fastest video card on the planet, then the 5870 is a no-brainer.  NVidia will not have anything to compete until February or March 2010 (if then) according to their CEO.

Reviews of the the HD 5870 compared to the Asus 295 which out performs the 5870 more times then not.  Here is the link. http://www.techspot.com/review/198-ati-radeon-hd-5870-review/.  To me the warranty is the most important, be aware of the makers  warranties, lifetime (295 from EVGA) verses 3 years.  Called XFX on the warranty of their 5870 could not get  anyone on the phone.

XFX has a Double lifetime, overclocker friendly warrenty, as long as you register within 30 days of purchase.

The 5870 is now the fastest single GPU card available.  Period.  While it's true that only in certain situations will the 5870 best the GTX295, we are comparing a single GPU card to a dual GPU card.  The much lower noise and power consumption of the 5870 is not something to overlook either.  Newegg is listing the XFX 5870 at 379.00 and the XFX GTX295 at 479.00.  As mentioned, factor in Eyefinity and it becomes a much less difficult call from my particular cheap seat vantage point.

It's anticipated/rumoured that the 5870x2 Dual GPU card from AMD will be launched in late October to coincide with Windows 7 and it's expected that this card will completely trounce the GTX 295, also have Eyefinity and be competitively priced.

Personally, I'm looking hard at the 5850 for the best performance/price.

One should also consider the 5870 was run on beta drivers against the much more expensive 295. Very impressive results and definately more bang per buck.

Some sites suggest November, others suggest the Windows 7 rollout in late October.  What I have gleaned is there may be driver development issues regarding Crossfire, which is required for that card to function ... and I would suggest that when they are resolved you will see this card.

I like the idea of running three monitors in portrait mode if it can really do that AND keep up with AA and AF while also processing heavy clouds in FSX. Everything you need for AHII can be done with far less power than the 5870 or 295 either one.

Been looking at projectors instead of screens, this would not impact on graphics card at all.

Just the room where your projector(s) will be.   If it isn't dark, don't waste your time/money.  But yes, it would eventually fall back on the Graphics Card.
