I guess I don't understand,  you people fly virtual airliners for a virtual airline company?  What Simulator SW is it?

Do you get points, credits, for flying routes?

Sounds like fun.

For someone starting out do you learn to fly with a Cessna and move up as you get experience?

Do you have to earn certain virtual ratings, like insturment, multi-engine, turbo prop, and things like that?

Thanks!
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

It depends on the setup. The most common is using VATSIM, plus some flight tracking software, on top of either MS FSX or X-Plane 9.

Again, depends on the virtual airline and software they're running. I've got some points with Delta Virtual, but I don't think they're actually worth anything other than some enoodle envy.

Some require check rides, solid knowledge of procedures, etc, before "letting" you fly heavier iron. Others don't care and you can fly whatever routes they have posted. None of it is actually necessary either if you just want to fly in controlled airspace. Just load up VATSIM and FSX/X-9, and off you go. I rather enjoy taking U-2s and SR-71s out of military bases next to active commercial hubs.

I know there's another member here that likes to take Tu-95s out of Cuba and go buzz the east coast. The controllers will occasionally scramble a mil-sim intercept against him. neat stuff... too bad you can't blow people up.

What's the starting salary?
12%starting, but goes all the way up to 42% or possibly 47%.

you dont get a "Salary", instead you get paid a percentage based off of the income the flight makes.

so you book a flight that earns 35k from passengers and 15k from cargo for a total of 50k and say your fuel bill was 10k, then the total profit for the flight is 40k. Now say you get paid 25% then you personally would get 10k added to your bank account. the other 30k then gets multiplied (based on how much your airline is worth) and goes into the airline's account. we have a multiplier of 25 so that 30k in the example above would make use (the airline) 750K.

you can use this money to buy planes for your personal fleet along with cars, toys, houses, etc...

for starting with us... if you have flown at that site before we will let you just go straight up to medium sized aircraft (767), depending on what your records show, and then after a while and we see your capable, we will let you go heavy if you want. If you are brand new, we will make you fly "training" flights, which just gets you use tho the process of flying on that site.

@eagl, yes. most virtual airlines dont survive. i was just stating that this is a well established VA and wont be going anywhere if anyone was affraid to join because of the high percentage of failures.

I'm totally clueless about Microsoft Flight Simulator, and its community.  I suppose I can understand how flying as virtual pilots on virtual planes in a virtual airline might be as much fun to some people as AH or (name your game) is to others.

How does a flight make money?
Do you have virtual passengers or payload?
Does the airline exist in a persistent online virtual reality with shared virtual air-space, like the AH arenas?

Maybe most important, do you have hot twenty-something virtual flight attendants in the crews?

I might be interested after all.

I won't do it unless its a true to life experience.  Do they force you to eat food court cuisine, sit around for 4+ hours between flights while people ask you what gate the flight to Sarasota is leaving from, have people peddling Rosetta Stone or various airline credit cards while you walk through your house? Minimum/reduced rest overnights, weather delays, angry passengers, mechanical failures and bitter flight attendants.

In my view those are all good reasons to stick to flight simulators.  :D

There IS a program called FSPassengers that lets you "run" the company inside FS itself, shows your fleet inventory, and lets you sim stuff like when to serve drinks, food, fastening seatbelts, etc. Den told me about this...when you barrel roll the aircraft or something of the sort, passengers scream. :)

I used to be a CEO of XL Virtual...bought tracking software and PIREP stuff http://www.vabase.com/ It's really fun if you get into it and have the time.
